Thoughts on a designated "Truck gun"

I have another thread open, but it isn't in relation to this topic. I'm considering getting a cheaper AR, and keeping it in my truck. It's an older truck, two door, beat to crap, so it wouldn't be appealing to a thief in my mind. I keep all electronis out of sight, so it looks like a bare bones work truck basically. Do you keep a gun in your truck, and it it your "Truck gun" I would keep a mag loaded in the glove box maybe, or tucked somewhere else, seperate from the rifle. Thoughts?

That's funny, I was recently thinking about the same thing. When I was growing up it seemed everybody with a pick-up had a gunrack in the back window with a rifle, shotgun, or compound bow in it. Yeah, I know I'm a redneck.

Anyway, I got as far as having some type of gunsafe bolted behind the bench seat in my old Dakota in my thinking, before other projects distracted me. Not sure if/when I'll get back to it.

The gun I had in mind for it is a Rossi Ranch Hand .44mag. Because it's a handgun I could keep the magazine loaded. It would probably be the only "truck" gun but I wouldn't use it just for that. Of course it could be me just trying to find another reason to buy one

Willing to take the risk a gun could wind up in the wrong hands and be used in a crime?

At least figure out a way to lock it to the vehicle.

makes me glad i live in wyoming. i commonly have one or more guns in my vehicle and never worry about them being stole. i guess im still one of those rednecks with a gun rack.

I carry what I want to in my truck during the day. Then I carry it in the house with me at night. Problem solved.

I have a Marlin lever action carbine in .357 I carry. It's definitely my truck gun now cause it does get beat around.

There's normally a gun in my truck. I keep it locked, of course, and don't leave valuables out in plain view. No sense inviting trouble, but in this state it's fairly common to have a gun in a vehicle. So common, in fact, that I'd bet that half the cars in the nearest parking lot have a gun stashed away somewhere.

My regular truck gun was a Ruger 10/22 kept on a window rack but mounted below the window in my old, really old, King Cab Dodge. I often also had a Savage .243 for dogs. I also often carried a lot of photography equipment. Only security problem was if I had service done by Wal-Mart. I always insisted they be sure to lock the truck after the work. They never did until I wrote a strong letter to HQ.
FWIW, if I still farmed I would not be without a rifle in my truck at all times. I also often wore a pistol, either my Ruger .22lr Single Six or my Ruger Redhawk .44 mag.

lol
You realize that if it is an older 1894c (pre-safety), those are going for close to $700 bucks these days right? Your truck gun might have gone and gotten valuable on you.

One thing you could consider if you want to carry a AR rifle, Remington 870/ Mossberg 500 in a vehicle is the locking gun racks that are used in police cars. They have both a key and electric lock, are bolted to the vehicle and will slow someone way down in trying to steal the gun. Eventually you can, with determination, rip one out of a vehicle, or break the lock and get the gun out, but they are fairly tough. You can view them online at police supply catalogs such as Galls. Just google "police supply" for other companies that sell them. They are not cheap. The electric lock works from a hidden (your choice on where you hide it) switch that will hold it unlocked for a few seconds after you push the button. FYI a Remington 760 pump rifle will fit in the lock designed for a Remington 870 shotgun as long as the rifle is not scoped. I use one of those racks in my house to hold my 760 rifle.

Sure an AR would work but "truck gun" just screams lever action or AK47 to me. I'd just get a $400 WASR and throw it in the back. You'll be able to easily and reliably engage anything 4 legged or 2 legged from 100 meters and in with ease. As far as the stolen gun thing---just report it and there won't be any issue.

I keep an SU-16 for a truck-gun. It can hold a 20 round mag in the stock and when folded it is considered "taken down" (legally important in Michigan.)

Ah. It's a truck gun believe me. Put it this way, I sure wouldn't give no $700 for it now. Get my drift.

Ex truck gun

I traded a snubby for an S&W 60-4 revolver that had been a truck gun for five years or so. It turned out to be a twenty-year-old target gun, accurate, stainless, tight enough to squeak. It ain't goin' in no truck without me in it.

maybe a bit off topic... but I have one of two regular "truck guns"

1st is an old H&R folding 12 gauge that I customized, shortening the barrel & adding a screw type adjustable poly choke, which I added a fiber optic bead these old single shots fold so tightly, I could about fit it in a pool cue box... it's IMO, like those pocket fisherman poles they used to sell... I can shoot any number of shot, ball or slug loads out of my "big gun"

my 2nd is a Thompson Contender with an assortment of 10" barrels... one is my 45 Colt hunting barrel in 10", the 2nd is a custom 44 Hotshot barrel ( this is a shallow rifled barrel with a straight rifled choke tube that screws in the end... it was designed in the 60's to shoot 44 mag or 44 shot shells that used a huge plastic shot bulb that made them about the size of a .410 ) mine is converted to shoot 444 Marlin cases, which I load like brass .410 shells, or put 3-.375" lead round balls, or use light loads of 444 Marlin... the top sight on the shot barrel is fiber optic, plus it has a see through mount with a laser mounted, & under the barrel a tactical flashlight, & was designed to shoot skunks & other farm yard varmints after dark... I want to add a 3rd barrel to the set... something longer range... I thought maybe .223, but want to keep my barrels at 10"... so lately have been thinking about doing a fast twist 22 Hornet ( I have a couple guns I've put 22 Hornet chambers on 1 in 9" twist barrels, & have been loading up to 68 grain bullets in the 22 Hornet case )

all of these are currently getting dura coated to make them more rust resistant

& of course all are single shots... a long way from the AR platform, but with either cased in my truck, they don't look like anything worth stealing, & I could shoot or hunt just about anything

I have an ak with a folding stock. It is cheap, reliable, enough rounds and firepower and is small enough to lock under a seat so it is secure and out of sight.

I dont care if it gets banged around or scratched up and it has never failed to fire. Frankly, ak's are not really my favorite, but for a gun that you dont mind getting wet, dirty or messed up, they kind of fit the bill.

Saiga

Classic arms is selling them for $299.99. They're a Russian made AK in sheep's clothing. Available in 7.62x39, .223 or 5.45x39. Tough, reliable, and you won't faint if it gets dinged up. Not as accurate as an AR, though.

They can be converted back to AK configuration by the user. I kind of like the sporter config as is, however.
