This may sound stupid, but on a S&W M&P15 can you remove the front iron sights?

I like that way! Not pretty but you can file it up pretty neat.

Me, I hate that front post M16 type sight and no idea why they still make them.

Sheese, why would anyone want to shoot a bad sight like that when you can get good ones. But then I am not an AR guy, though guilty of having an RRA ATH on order because it is accurate (and not weird front sight!)

Avoid putting the front sight on your hand guard. the hand guard is more prone to flex (especially if you're using a sling), but the barrel is not. Here's my M&P15MOE:

I've replaced the sights and all of the furniture except the hand guard. The front sight is a Yankee-Hill flip-up gas block/sight unit. The rear sight is a Troy flip-up. The rifle originally came with a standard front post and a Magpul rear flip-up.

Here's the same front sight on a gun I built from scratch.

One last thing - put a sling swivel on the hand guard and use it instead of the one that comes on the front sight (you can get the YHM front sight with a sling swivel). My scratch-built rifle is done that way. Once again, this keeps from deflecting the barrel due to pressure from the sling.

They still make them because they are bomb proof sights. No flip up sight is ever going to be as tough as a fixed front sight post thats pinned to the barrel. Flip up sights can also have a small amount of "slop" or "play" in them.

Some people want to use iron sights because its more "sporting" or challenging.
I want to get another AR15 but I want a A2 carry handle and a pencil barrel so I can have a nice lightweight "KISS" rifle.

Also in my experiance the front sight post doesn't interfear with optics in any way. I have a TA11 ACOG on my AR15 right now and the optic zooms "past" the front sight post so I don't see it at all. If your running a red dot just use a riser mose people find the lower 1/3rd cowitness the most practical.

I suppose that depends on your point of view (no pun intended :) ) and what youre using the gun for. I prefer Aimpoints on my guns, and find it much nicer not to have anything out in front. The fold downs make for a much cleaner and less busy sight picture.

Do you use a riser?

I prefer the EoTech Reticule so when I ran a EoTech on my rifle I had it on a YHM riser. The lower 3rd cowitness put the irons out of the way.
But I agree it is all about what people prefer on their rifles. Some people (like me) prefer the have the simplicity of the fixed sight post.
Thats what is great about AR's there are thousands of ways to set them up. and anyone can have exactly what they want as long as they are willing to spend the $$.

No, I dont have risers on mine. I just find its easier to keep things in as close to the same plane as I can get them, be it irons, red dot, or scope. With the BUIS down, out of the way, it just adds to the simplicity.

Same goes for my AK's, although even with an Ultimak, I cant get the Aimpoints down to true center. They are more like the lower 1/3. Even so, cheek weld is basically the same.

Another part of the problem for the AK's is, all the lever mounts are really made for the AR flat tops, so you need to go with a low, fixed Aimpoint ring and deal with it.

Youre right about the AR's and the "thousands of ways". I try to keep mine pretty simple though. :)

Yeah I have a Ultimak on my AK as well. The are one of if not the best option for mounting a red dot on your AK.
The T1/R1's come the closest and do get a lower 1/3rd. But I'm currently useing a Trijicon Reflex II RX06 on an A.R.M.S. throw lever. It dosen't come anywhere close to a cowitness but its light and dosen't need batteries. So it kind of fits the AK "mentality".

BTW, if your S&W has a standard front sight post, you can easily remove it by driving the pins from the wrong side of the gun (as opposed to the side all the other manufacturers do it).
