This is an interesting development...

I heard this on NPR today and the talking heads were really happy it was going on. They seemed to believe that it would accomplish something of major importance. Suppose they hope to find someone uttering the words "Merry Christmas" in public?

Miami police announced Monday they will stage random shows of force at hotels, banks and other public places
Asinine. Completely asinine. Nothing more than beating their d**ks on their chests. It will do nothing other than make those involved feel like real he-men, which they apparently are in desperate need of.

Harley, I recommend you move to some other country. You are WRONG on several levels and do not deserve the freedoms you readily S*** on because you "have nothing to hide". You are a coward, sir, and I'm yer huckleberry!

Okay what does random acts of force have to do with preventing terrorist acts? WE have a big non random show of force going on Iraq. Has it stopped every terrorist action...nope.

All it is designed to do is give politcal brownie points and citizens a sense of security....

I think the best weapon is watchful citizens and a well trained police department. I dont know how much training is derived from surrounding a bank to check IDs?????

Instead of wasting money on that why not use it to give some actual anti-terrorism training to the police out on the street?

Err,

rkba - how come your "ORIGINAL" is dated a full day later than the so called "BOGUS" one?

The earlier story has the line about checking for ID's.

I'm curious...

I'm curious as to what this project will actually acomplish for the city of Miami. I am unaware of any sort of identifing markings or features on your ID that would assist the police officers assigned to this program in identifing terror suspects. I remember having to choose an organ donor preference, and telling them my real hair color, but nothing about any extremist groups. All the while, I would imagine a terrorist could get a fake ID just as easily as I did when I was in high school. I wonder if they would use theirs to buy beer too? ;) The truly troubling thing for me is that, as one member said earlier, this can quickly lead to "checkpoints" and random stops or searches, along with other very obvious violations of civil rights. I'm all for homeland security, and I'm all for seeking out and neutralizing terrorists, but I will definately be making an issue if anyone, I don't care who they are, comes up to me and demands to see my ID. Unless of coarse, I'm at the airport. At which time I will be wearing my flipflops, carrying my new carry on luggage, which consists of a clear plastic bag. Which for some reason, they look at as if I might use it as a weapon too.

And this won't help protect against terrorists at all.
Yeah, I was wondering about this myself. If cops surround a building and start checking IDs, how exactly is a terrorist with a vest loaded with explosives going to respond? "Oh well, the American police are here, I guess the game is up, I'd better take off this vest now."
