Always carry; never tell
In the anonymity of this community, I don't mind revealing that I carry, or what and when I carry.
In real life, however, I never discuss it. Even when others reveal in conversation that they have a CHL, I remain non-committal about my own CC status.
But if I had to respond to someone like the woman who questioned the OP, I would probably say, "If you disapprove of my being armed, that's fine. And if I ever see someone trying to rob you or hurt you, I'll be sure to act as if I don't know you!"
P.S. The OP said something like, "It's not like I'm in a militia..."
I think it's unfortunate that the idea of citizen militias has been so successfully demonized by the propagandist media that even many of us in the firearms community view militias as "extreme".
In truth, citizens being organized into local militias is precisely what the Founders had in mind, and what the 2nd Amendment calls for.
When tyranny or social unrest comes literally to your front door (or just into handgun range), it's pretty much too late for successful resistance.
