This anti-gun Letter to the Editor made my blood boil...

This is the ultimate case of apples vs oranges.

I was unable to confirm his inflammatory quote of Supreme Court Justice Scalia.

I think a more reasonable comparison is how Palm Beach County's
murder by firearm rate has changed over the last several years.
The reality is it has improved. I checked the FDLE site to confirm this.

It also comes across as arrogant to ignore the will of a MILLION Floridians
who have chosen to get concealed weapons permits.

If you look at the comments, you will see how your average Floridian
feels about the issue.

Personally, I don't want to be reduced to "banging pots and pans together"
in a potentially deadly confrontation.

To make this worse, I can bet you this guy lives in a gated community,
possibly secured by armed security.

While I am originally from the northeastern US, I would agree with the
sign "We don't care how you did it up north."

I think he should move back to NY if he is not happy.

Did you notice that the writer is a former Nassau County (NY) district attorney? So he is a northern transplant, and he is accustomed to living in one of the cities that most arrogantly disregards the Constitution. And not only the 2nd Amendment. Let's not forget that one of the reasons NY crime statistics are as low as they are (aside from simply cooking the books, of course) is NYC's unconstitutional practice of "stop-and-frisk." (4th Amendment.)

I have to agree; if he thinks life is so much better in NYC, he should move back there and live in his comfort zone.

Scalia's quotation is from his majority decision in Heller. It is accurate ... but the short bit quoted belongs in a longer context that tells us the true meaning.

I believe the right answers to rants is a calm, objective reply. Over and over.
Spinning up the rant machines typically does little good in the long run.
Further, there have been significant questions on the accuracy of NYC (and Chicago and a few larger cities) as to question the credibility of most any comparison.

As a wise sage once stated, 'first liar doesn't have a chance'.

The writer's methodology is suspect on several fronts. The first of those is comparing two very different cities, each with its own standard of living, cultural makeup, policing strategies, and rates of substance abuse. I could go on.

This is also why we need to be careful when we claim City A has less gun violence than City B because City A has less restrictive gun laws.

New math.

Was it Mark Twain who commented that, "Figures never lie, but liars always figure"?
New Math was 1968, this is Common Core calculus.:):D

As a former long-time resident of Florida (53-89), I watched the encroachment of all the hordes from the northeast move in (as well as from other parts of the hemisphere) and basically destroy the existing social protocols and structures and replace them with the garbage they brought with them from wherever they came. I witnessed all the high rise and condos being built and the gated communities and fancy malls. I feel your frustration, and old-time Floridians adopted the war cry of "Go back to where you came from..." long, long ago."

I left in 89 to AZ, my parents moved out of Dade to Palm Bch County, but even that got too infested, so they finally came out west to AZ in 96 to live out their last years. I'm afraid that there isn't a whole lot you can do about it, my friend, except move. I believe Florida is now the fourth most populous state in the Union.

Unfortunately, moving backfires, too. Sooner or later, the nice new "paradise" you find gets discovered by the same types of hordes that drove you out of your previous "paradise." The issue here is with Californians moving into the state with the usual rhetoric about "We're going to change that" when they encounter something they don't like. It really gets old after a while. 25 years ago, the little desert community I moved to was 700 people; Now it's over 3000. My home borders on BLM National Forest land; I used to be able to walk out my front door and shoot to my heart's content. Now it's full of effete bike riders who are abolsutely appalled that we are permitted to "shoot guns." Two guesses where they come from, and what they "are going to change."

I'm not saying that AZ state govt. is the best, but, even with the corruption and incompetence they still manage to make a lot more sense about some things than a lot of other states. If I want to purchase an NFA weapon, I have to meet face-to-face with the county sherrif once. Subsequent purchases, mail the app to him, he signs and you get it back either the next day or 2 at the most.

We have Constitutional no permit concealed carry which has NOT resulted in the predicted Dodge City blood flowing in the streets,. We have open carry (even before CCW was legal), but the people for the most part have common sense enough not to go around making asses of themsleves (and us) by carrying their AKs and ARs into the local restaurant.

I'm afraid that people like your newspaper contributor just don't get it and never will. You just can't educate them or change their minds.

I know it's infuriating to have to read twisted rhetoric such as your Palm Beach Post reader wrote, but it's a rule of society that the rich and powerful have grotesquely bloated egos and they think that their way is the "only way."

gyvel, the other demographic moving in to the greater Phoenix area is Chicagoans...more Cubbies fans up there than live by Wrigley Field. They have the same mindset, and I do my best to explain to people moving here, "We like it the way it is. If you want the laws of the state you left, you are certainly free to return there".
Firearms people are always welcome to move here, but the attitude I'm talking about extends to all of our laws - we like it this way. :)

Around here, where I live, I have run into a few midwesterners (Chicago, etc), but they don't seem to have that mindset that you describe (thankfully-LOL!!) One of my buddies lives in Vail outside of Tucson and he is constanly griping about the %@##$$&*%$#@ Liberal *&^%$#@&&^s (LOL!) that live in Pima County.

Growing up in Florida, even in Dade County, there were places you could go shooting that were 5 minutes from the house. One of our favorite pastimes was going into the mangrove swamps off of US1 in north Dade and slaughtering blue land crabs by the hundreds with a .22. Believe it or not, the crabs were hard to see, wily and very quick to duck into their holes. Most people laugh when I tell about this, but it really honed my observation skills and improved my shooting alot! LOL By the time I left FL, it was a 70 mile one way trip to the nearest place you could shoot without being harassed or arrested.

Anyway, I'm not a native Arizonan, but this place is the longest I have ever lived in one location without moving, and I like it. I moved here to get away from those who like to tell others how to run their lives, and certainly NOT to "change things."

Now, having done my share of griping about Californians, I have a buddy who is moving here from Cal after years of me badgering him. He is the antithesis of the California Liberal, loves guns, loves CASS, loves shooting, collecting, hot rods, you name it. I can't help wonder if we shouldn;'t try to get all the Cals who think like he does here; Maybe then the whole state would collapse in on itself. LOLL!!!!

Maybe somebody should make this schmuck aware of the fact that practically everybody in Israel is armed. Doesn't seem to be a problem there; At least not with the homogeneous Israelis. On second thought, this guy is so dim-witted that the point would be lost on him.

I am originally from California and when I left that miserable state and moved to Nevada, finally landing a job in a small rural town, it took almost all of 9 years to be accepted as a normal human being and not a kook from la la land. A year later I got transferred to Tucson AZ. Wasn't all that happy about the transfer but the pay raise was nice. Guess at 35 years this is the longest I've been living anywhere so I guess Arizona agrees with me. Every once in a while I end up talking with a California transplant recently arrive and right off the bat I hear what they don't like about AZ like need more gun control. I just say, "Welcome to Arizona. Now go home." Sometimes it gives me an opening to tell them they moved to get away from what they had. Then I can ask them why do they want to bring here and inflict it on us? Get some strange looks and reactions. Dunno if I ever got through to any of them but I try.

Maybe somebody should make this schmuck aware of the fact that practically everybody in Israel is armed.
Maybe they shouldn't, since that's not really the case.

Israel requires a license to own a gun, which is subject to fees, a "good cause" requirement, and recurring renewals. There are also limits on what weapons can be owned, and how much ammunition can be owned.

Oh, and "self defense" is not one of the criteria for "good cause."

Unless you're a native American telling someone to go back where they came from is kinda ironic.

Before Florida was purchased by the US it was a haven for escaped slaves and Southeast Indians. Once we went in that got flipped real fast.

Maybe somebody should make this schmuck aware of the fact that practically everybody in Israel is armed.

Maybe they shouldn't, since that's not really the case.

Actually, I was making a somewhat left-handed, snide esoteric comment about the fact that homogeneous groups of people seem to have far less violence in their societies than the veritable "rainbow" of multicultures that inhabit New York City and other "garden spots" in the U.S. (Detroit, LA, Chicago, Miami, etc.)

Whether it's politically correct to say so or not, the statistics don't lie: When minorities from other third world countries move in, the crmie rate goes up.

As I said, I doubt he would have been able to make the connection about the armed poplulace in Israel and what's going on in his former NY home.

I moved to Florida 41 years ago from NJ. I never looked back or wanted to go back. I think the people from up in NY, NJ, and the liberal states that come down here in the winter, as we call them snow birds should just enjoy our weather and keep there mouths shut. I don't care about there views on guns or any thing else for that matter. I don't subscribe to the Palm Beach Post because it is a liberal rag and likes to print the crap that these people feel they have a right to say, when they are not even permanent residents. If you don't like the way we live down here, then stay the hell HOME in your Big Apple. We don't want you. We survive 7 months out of the year without you and we can survive the other 5 without you. Like they say when in Rome do like the Romans.
So when in Florida, do like the Floridians or stay the hell home.

At least those irritable snow birds can't vote in Florida.
It's mighty hard to believe that the north east states are where this country began the fight for liberty and freedom.
As it has turned out, they might as well have remained British subjects.

Well, sure - when your MO is the Bloomberg model illegal warrantless, probably-cause-less "stop and frisk" on a massive scale, crime DOES go down - but at what price?
