I was thinking of getting a 9mm and wondering what the best of my top three picks would be. I'm looking at these:

Beretta 92
Sig P229
Browning High Power

Any thoughts other that you don't like the 9mm calibur? :D

I own a 9mm and don't like it. I'm hoping to buy a Khar in .40 S&W and will readily sell my Ruger P95 9mm when that happens.

Atc, I have a Ruger P95 and I don't blame you for not liking it. It is an inexpensive, not so accurate, OK so-so pistol. I'm shopping for a bit more quality in a 9mm.

SIG 229!
to me it is more comfortable, and more accurate than the beretta..though it can cost a few bills more. one problem i have been told about is that if you drag it through the dirt it jams..aka its a city gun.

beretta is comfortabl too, and accurate, but i have had problems with them repeatedly, 92fs, 92fc the wings on the locking lug tend to break.

Browning high power is GREAT gun too...accurate, simple to clean and reliable. and with right grips can be real comfy

ruger is a good gun, it tends to work fine, not as accurate as sig or beretta, and i dont like how they feel in my hands.

I say go to the local indoor range and rent what you can, and get the one that you like the feel of and that WORKS BEST FOR YOU! personal preference is big deal...i can pick up one gun and make a single ragged hole at 21ft and then pick up the next of same caliber and have a 10" pattern.

9mm's i reccomend

Glock 19(if your gonna use it for defensive purposes DONT GET THE C MODEL you'll blind yourself with flash if need to use it an night)

CZ-75

hi-power

I'm really happy with my USP 9C and the 9mm in general. Any reason why H&K is not on the list? Of your top 3, I'd go with the Sig. Excellent trigger, great shooting gun. I've never fired a Hi-Power though, so I can't compare.

All three are excellent choices. The Beretta is the biggest one of the bunch, but holds the most bullets (and has the cheapest regcaps available for it.)

9mm is a very good caliber for a number of reasons, among which are low price and low recoil, which translate into lots of affordable practice. Another major benefit of the 9mm is the fact that many great gun designs are chambered for it...in some cases exclusively.

Glock 19(if your gonna use it for defensive purposes DONT GET THE C MODEL you'll blind yourself with flash if need to use it an night)

The Myth That Wouldn't Die...

Ever owned a ported C-model Glock? Ever shot it at night? I couldn't tell the difference in muzzle flash between my Glock 32, my Glock 23C, and my Glock 19. Last night shoot at Thanksgiving was done with an extensive array of ported guns, including a *&* Model 29 with a MagnaPorted 3" barrel. Nobody went blind, not even temporarily. In some cases, several regcap mags were ripped into Pepper Poppers at 15 yards, with 90% of the bullets making a satisfying "clink" sound even in pitch darkness.

Ported guns will not blind you at night, period. That theory keeps coming around, mostly perpetuated by folks who never shot a ported gun in darkness.

FRREEBIRD: I own the Ber 92 and also the HP. The Ber is a pretty good all around gun and extremely reliable. For 9mm, I still think the CZ-75 is the best gun for the money and the CZ-85 Combat is a better version of it.

sig 229 is a fantastic firearm, might i suggest taking a test drive with a walther p-99, it's a sweet firearm.

To get right to the root of your question....... Buy the Beretta 92
I have two of them and I love them, Thousands of rounds and never a failure, accurate right out of the box. toss on a set of Hogue wraparounds and you wont be sorry. I do not have big hands and I love them. If you do not like the Berettas I would favor the Sig next...... Let us know what you get......;)

I have a Beretta and a 229. Both are excellent guns. Both are accurate and well made. The Beretta is insanely reliable (it'll fire ammo that jammed other guns), is easy and cheap to get hi-caps for, has an exposed hammer, safety/decocker, and is a classic. It's biggest drawback is the size: while it's not particularly wide, it's big and heavy.

The 229 is also reliable (though I'd give first honors to the Beretta), you can get 13 round hi-caps (though they're more expensive than the Beretta's), has an excellent trigger (better than the Beretta's), and while it doesn't have a safety, it does have a decocker. Regarding size, the 229 may be slightly wider than the Beretta, is just as heavy, but is smaller. Most would say the direct Sig competitor to the Beretta is the Model 226, not the 229.

I don't have much first hand knowledge about the Hi-Power.

Other guns to check out include the Glock 19 and Walther P99, with honorable mentions going to the Sig 228, HK USP and HK P7.

I have had the Beretta 92 and Browning HP. Both are good reliable guns.
I have never seen an actual Beretta that busted its locking lugs. I have over 5000 rounds through mine, with never a burp. More accurate than I will ever be.
The HiPower is likewise a fine pistol. Battle tested for over 60 years now. The main thing for me is the slimmer grips. It just feels a little better in my hands.
I don't think you can go wrong with your choises.

Which (if any) of these have you actually fired? The opinions offered aren't going to mean much for your particular circumstance. About the only meaningful, REAL advice you can get is which ones to avoid. The three you listed are all quality firearms, so you can't go wrong with any of them

Get out there and try them all out. They'll make the decision for you, more than likely.

I have experience with all three that you mention. My 1st choice would be an older model hi-power as I believe that they are better than the newer ones. The hi-power concealed better for me.
The beretta is a fine pistol but is very large. Could not get along with the sig and it was traded in for a cz75pcr.

AmericanFreeBird, objectively speaking, you cannot go wrong with any of the three guns you listed. The only way you can decide is to shoot each of them. All I can offer is my personal likes/don't likes.

  1. Beretta 92: Very nice gun, but *big*. I have sizeable hands (8+ inches from the base of the hand to the tip of the middle finger). It never felt quite right in my hand. As a result, I could not get the accuracy out of it I should have.
  2. Sig 229: While praised by many as some of the best pistols in the world, Sigs have never done much for me. I always feel like I'm holding an el cheapo assemblage of stamped out tin metal (this is just an irrational personal feeling). Also, I don't like the fact that there is no manual safety, just a decocker. On top of that their website sucks :)
  3. Browning HP: Definitely my favorite of the bunch, as long as we're talking about the one assembled in Portugal.

I think you should also take a look at the CZ site for very high-quality and reasonably prized weapons.

You don't even want to consider a Glock 19? I carry one every day down here in Miami. Best carry gun I ever had.

AmericanFreeBird:

SIG P229 is by far the best.IMHO!

Browning High Power is good.

Beretta 92fs is good, but BIG.

I have a SIG 229 9mm, it's a great gun.:D

I also have a Beretta 92, it's a very good gun that I'm selling to buy a Walther P99.;)

All good choices and great replies so far. The BHP is just an elegant firearm and a fantastic carry weapon due to its slimness. Don't let the single action deter you as it can be safely carried cocked and locked. Get a good holster for it. My other choices would be a CZ-75B or PCR if its for concealed carry and an HK P7M8. Have fun!

When you ask someone , which one is best or something to that affect, you are going to get opinionated answers. Now for mine:D For defensive 9's I have a Glock 19 and CZ75B, I would be really hard pressed to choose one over the other if I had too. The merits of the Glock are its durability and how carryable it is. The CZ offers superb accuracy, and very good durability as well. If you would have no problem carrying a BHP then you would have no prob with the CZ. While the BHP is an excellent gun, I preferred the grip of the CZ.
