I just came back from looking at a WITNESS .45 and have to admit that I really liked it a lot. But I don't like EAA. CZ is the same thing that I liked, but better execution of the idea and higher quality. I like the longer dust cover on the 97.

Then again...

I've been getting the HK itch again. Bad. The USP .45 is a contender.

Between the two, it's a toss up.
Then again, if I trade off my 1911, I'll be kicking my butt about it for the rest of my life. But I'm no gunsmith. Greater chance of me doing more harm than good trying to make it "right".

I think I have my mind made up... but I wanna see what the consensus is.

But I'm no gunsmith.
SIT THE DREMEL DOWN AND BACK AWAY FROM THE GUN!!!-With that out of the way...

Seriously I admire the guys on the Board with enough money and/or patience that they never sell a gun to get a gun. Unfortunetly I'm not one of them.

I've learned the hard way you may regret selling something even if your "sure" you have no use for it, but if you sell something you even have a hint you may want to keep you WILL regret it. Your post contains more than a hint you want to keep the 1911.

In short,

Step One: Keep the 1911
Step Two: Get a job ;)
Step Three: Get the HK

"Trade my 1911 in on an HK USP".

Well, that "trade-in value" might be enough to afford the HK's slide stop, but not much more.

"Trade my 1911 in on a CZ 97B".

The 97B's a much better choice:

Positives

All steel; dedicated 10rd mag; SA cocked & locked option, w/ positive manual safety, or hammer-down DA 1st shot; full-length monolith-type inverted rails; screw-in barrel bushing; loaded chamber indicator; f.p. safety; decent sights; extremely ergonomic grip, probably the best ever made; reasonably priced for hard-working Americans; and, best of all, it doesn't look like it was designed by a committee of treehuggers.

Negatives

Not offered in 10mm Auto. ;)

Can you blame me a wandering eye?

I'll tell you the problem with George's 1911. He is a fickle man. :p

He has malfunctions with 1 kind of ammo. Not all sorts of ammo. Not different types of ammo. Not different brands. 1 particular hollow point high pressure loading.

The gun fires, extracts, ejects, but then the fresh round's nose goes into the chamber, and the slide closes on it while the base of the round is still in the magazine. I was thinking about this, I believe that a heavier recoil spring would solve the problem. Or better yet, don't shoot that kind of ammo any more. :)

But if you absolutley have to get rid of it (a man's relationship with his gun is a personal thing, if you have lost confidence, you have lost confidence) I would get the CZ. I think the USP is a good gun, but it is expensive, and its magzines are expensive. The CZ is about $200 less than the HK. $450 or so IIRC from J&G sales. But I would keep the 1911 myself. You will trade it, then one day the HK or the CZ will choke (all guns do some time or another) and then you will question your choice forever.

Friends don't let friends trade guns...

But if you do decide to sell it, I'll buy some of your McCormick 8 rounders.

Still don't think you should though.

Although I don't shoot it much, my Colt '91a1 is a keeper. But my USP 45 just plain impresses me. Rugged, accurate, reliable, durable and fun to shoot.

George . . .

All good options, however, I would keep the 1911A1.

We both know H&Ks are terrific, but my .45 USP really is too large for comfortable CCW and its reliability and accuracy -- although excellent -- are no better than any of my 1911A1s (Colt, Kimber and a couple Springfields -- but particularly my Springfield TRP).

The CZ 97B is a wonderful .45 ACP -- accurate, built like a bank vault and with great quality. However, it is larger and heavier than a full-sized 1911A1 (and, yes, I understand the 10+1 versus 8+1 capacity difference), which may make concealed carriage problematic -- and I know this will be a primary CCW weapon for you.

Therefore, all things considered, have a well-qualified smith make whatever minor "tweaks" the 1911A1 requires -- if any -- and carry it with confidence.

GH,
A good, thought provoking question. Bravo.

Keep the 1911.
Buy the CZ.

The fact that you feel insufficient funds are a problem is a clear indication that you have not efficiently and effectively inventoried your home for items that can be converted into funds for the project.
Two other words of encouragement.
Fathers' Day.:) :) :)

If it is your only 1911 keep the 1911 and then when you can afford a new gun without trading get the CZ. If you have more than one 1911, run don't walk and get yourself the CZ. I have never met a CZ owner who regretted the purchase (well, those of us who have developed the addiction may regret that, it gets expensive).

Another option

I used McCormick mags and after a while they wouldn't feed some ammo.

I restored these to (virtually) 100% reliability with a 7$ kit from Wilson that puts a Wilson follower and spring in a Colt-style mag. Could be worth a try. Hope this helps.
