Thinking of getting a new .22 Revolver.

And there's no law requiring anybody to shoot the Ruger SP double-action.
I don't. No good reason to.
Same with my Smith 34.

Ruger Single Six or Ten

Bought a Single Ten (liked the idea of 4 extra bullets), but was a hard decision since the Single Six comes with two barrels to shoot .22 magnums also. Both are fantastic. After shooting the Single Ten a few times, I like the SA so much I just brought home a New Blackhawk .357.

Since nobody mentioned it, I will. Of course it's not new.

I have an old High Standard R-100 Sentinel. Probably not as smooth as a S&W, but not bad at all. The fact that it's a nearly 60 year old revolver and mine has the requisite number of scratches, it's a fine shooter. Might also look at the Double 9. Same action, just looks like a western style revolver.

The Sentinel series looks more like a police style. Whatever. Probably a $200 gun that I don't worry about! Assuming, of course, I can find ammo for it. So far, so good.

I can't add much to what's been said, other than the fact that I have had a Ruger Single Six (with both cylinders) for a long time. Recently picked up a new SP101 as well. Both are great guns. Not cheap, but excellent revolvers.

-since the Single Six comes with two barrels to shoot .22 magnums also.

Pretty sure you meant two cylinders.

I'm just a little touchy about this because I read a whole book (yep one whole book-didn't get that library card for nothing!) where the author continually kept calling the cylinder of a particular revolver in the story the barrel. Drove me nuts. Finished the book on just sheer cussedness so when I criticized it (it had other 'issues' too) nobody could say 'well you didn't finish it so you can't really have a valid opinion on it.’

If you are going to buy a 22 handgun, buy a quality gun and skip the junk as it will always be junk like the Rohm.

I agree with the suggestions. Choose either Ruger or S&W in a new revolver and choose Ruger or Browning in a new semi-auto 22 pistol.

Hard to beat a Ruger Mark III (or Mark II) with a heavy barrel for plinking and general shooting. Hard to beat a Ruger Single Six for plinking, but I prefer double action 22 revolvers. My choice for fun has been a Ruger LCR in 22. I don't own the new SP101, but DPris pretty much laid that one out for you. I prefer S&W or older Colt products in 22 DA revolvers overall. You pay for them however.

You do get what you pay for, but Smith's are really getting expensive for me.

I have a S&W K-22 from 1947 that was (badly) nickel plated, a 10 round S&W 617, and a Dan Wesson Model 22. Good quality .22 revolvers aren't cheap, but they are well worth the price.

I have a single six with both cylinders. I installed the magnum cylinder once to make sure I knew how and it fit. I even have a box of 50 22mag. Out of the thousands of rounds I've put through the gun not a one has been magnum. A stainless 22lr Single ten is $50 less than the convertible from buds.

I'll just leave this here :)

For a DA revolver you can't do better than a Smith 617 (17s and 18s will do too).
For a SA revolver, a Ruger Single 6 (hate the single 10).
For a Semi auto, a Ruger Mark III. They will last several lifetimes: a bit heavy though.
