Thinking of buying a .40

I am looking for suggestions for a .40 that would be used for home defense / plinking / tactical shooting / fun. I am currently looking at the Glock Practical/Tactical 35, which seems like it would fit the bill for the above chores. I will admit that I am pretty new to the .40 market and am not very familiar with what's out there. Any suggestions are very welcome.

TIA,
Evan

If I were looking for a 40 S&W I would look at a Browning MkIII and a Glock 27. The Browning is the most accurate 40 I have shot and the Glock 27 thinks it can do anything. If I could only have one I would under duress opt for the Glock 27. I prefer the Browning but the Glock 27 does more things well. In other words, the Model 27 is easier to conceal. Regards, Richard.

I have three weapons that are .40 caliber. I have a Beretta 96, a Glock 27 and a 35. The G 35 is my favorite to shoot. I believe it would be a perfect choice for the uses you mentioned.

Greetings; Ditto the comments made concerning
the Glock 27. For a sub-compact, she shoot's
extremely well; and is a joy to carry concealed. :D I carry mine in a Galco belt-slide, thumb-break holster. :)

When I want to shoot a larger caliber pistol, I reach for my Glock 27. It's overall dimensions are quite small, but it has this almost spooky accuracy. The first time I fired it I just couldn't believe that such a small pistol could be so accurate. I'm not the only one here with that opinion. The G27 makes me look better than I am. :)

I have to agree with tlhelmer. My first and only .40 so far is the glock 35. I love this gun. Its extremely accurate and eats up what I feed it. I didn't notice a substantial increase in recoil from my sw99 in 9mm. For my first glock and my first .40 I couldn't be more pleased. You can use g22 high-caps in it too. I paid 650 for mine in Taxachusetts but I bet you can do better. I can't praise this pistol enough. Happy hunting and choose wisely.

I own a Para P-16, Glock 35, and Glock 22. Of the three the Glock 35 is probably my favorite. All three have proven very reliable and accurate. The 35 will shoot into 2 inches at 25 yards. The drawback to the Glocks is the expense and scarcity of pre ban hi-caps. The Para can still be ordered with a hi-cap and a certificate for two more.

EQP, I would also suggest the Glock 27 and a another favorite of mine in .40 is the Beretta Cougar 8040. Both are good guns in my opinion and you won't go wrong with either :)
Hope this helps,Let us know what you get :)

Happy Shooting :)

I desire a Glock 27 as many people mentioned here, but I noticd that concealed carry is not an isue on your list of criteria. You may be more comfortable with a Glock 22 or 23. Personally, my first 40 was a Beretta Cougar 8040. I still love the feel of it. If you don't have a need for a real high capacity, you may consider that. (10+1) Let us know what you get!

Id like to suggest one I shoot quite abit, the Glock 23. Its the "middle" Glock in .40, still concealable, but a bit easier to shoot than the G-27. You didnt mention carrying the gun, but I think this gun fits the bill for any use you would want it for. Hope this helps some. Also, I prefer the older style glocks with no figer grooves, see if you cant hold both of these guns (grooved, non-grooved) before you make a final decision. Take care........Opie

As an owner of both Glock 27 and Sig Sauer P229, I must admit that my Glock, although relatively accurate and reliable, is no match for P229. Out of many pistols in .40 that I've tried (Steyr, 1911, HP, HK, etc.), nothing seems to be on par with this Sig.

Unless it has something to do with tactical shooting I don't believe concealment was an issue so a .40 in a G27 might not be a viable option. The G23 might be a more comfortable choice. Me? I'd go with the Sig P229.

I have owned and tried several .40 pistols in the last few years and have not liked any of them. All were traded away in short order.
Yet, were I forced to choose only a .40, I would probably go with one of the Glocks because they are simple, reliable, rugged, and easy to maintain properly. BTW, the most important aspect of any pistol is probably its trigger. The Glock safe-action trigger is not a finely-tune specimen, but it is consistent. With practice, Glock shooters quickly become quite proficient and confident with their firearms. Of course, my only warning with Glock in .40 is to follow the manufactuer's rule and only shoot in it factory ammo of good quality. I know many people do not agree with this rule, but Gaston Glock knows what works in his pistols.
Follow his instructions to the letter.

We have never been modern.

Having shot a good many of the major brand 40s, the only ones that were ergonomic, reliable and accurate enough to suit me were the SIG P229 and the HK USP Compact. YMMV

FWIW, my favorite .40s are the Glock 23 and the Beretta 96.

To me, the G23 is remarkably easy to shoot and as reliable and (apparently) durable as a gun can be, although the grips of most Glocks are slightly uncomfortable for me (YMMV). I like the reliability of the 96 as well, along with its comfortable grip and overall quality.

Hi-Power!!!

It's my only .40 but it has negated the need for me to purchase anything else. :D

I have a Glock 22 in .40 and I am very pleased with it...it consitenly shoots sub 2 inch groups at 25 yds...offhand...I have done a little trigger work to it so far thats all...I have fired over 30,000 rounds through it..with out a SINGLE ftf that was'nt my fault(playing with wimpy reloads)...
Also the G22 is a full size pistol but it can still be carried concealed, with the proper clothing.
Also the ballistics numbers show it has more velocity and more energy than a .45..
just remember...

Don't forget to take a look at the HK USP Compact. It is an excellent gun. It is extremely well made and very accurate. The most common variant offers cocked & locked carry...Illini
