Thinking about getting my first AR

Good thread. I've got some research to do

Of all the firearms I've researched I have found the most information on the AR platform but IMO much of the info is misleading, the colt and couple other brands have a cult like following some AR forums simply go nuts if you suggest something other then the forums chosen group, in the end read pick according to "your" need and what you can afford personally a life time warranty is a bonus, most of the brands will serve the average AR owner just don't over think it.

Colt and a few other brands (BCM, Daniel Defense, LMT, Noveske) have a strong following on certain sites because they *are* excellent weapons that hold up to severe use. It's when someone compares a brand that is known to use materials or procedures that are less than optimal, and says, "but I've shot 1000 rounds out of mine without any trouble".

Shooting 1000 rounds over the course of a year is a heck of a lot different than shooting 1000 over three days in a carbine course, or using your weapon in the line of duty.

There is nothing wrong with not owning a "top tier" rifle...do thorough research, be an informed consumer (don't listen to some gunshop fudd), and make a purchase based upon your needs.

If you want a Colt AR then get it. Some guys like Colt 1911s and others Kimber, Springfield Armory, etc.

I don't think you can go wrong with either the 6920 or 6940. Start simple and only add stuff or change stuff on it as you discover the need for it. Either of those are fine rifles that can do lot right out of the box. Sounds like you want to 6940 but if the local shop does not have it this weekend you are fine with the 6920. Good plan.

I don't have Colt ARs, just LMT and BCM, and next week a FN barreled Palmetto State Armory ($399 complete FN upper with bolt carrier group!). But Colt certainly knows what they are doing and set the standard everyone compares to. I would be happy as a clam with a 6920. And the prices right now are fantastic. Have a great weekend picking up your new rifle!!!!

Known to use is key, while a certain brand may have used lessor materials they may not now and yet the internet warriors continue to shout that brand is bad. Many owner may never shoot 5000 rounds through there weapon others may do so in weeks, point is take all into consideration don't just blindly follow your peers or internet shooting friends without thought at some point it becomes childish. Brand loyalty in the modern global economy is not productive as suppliers/parts change monthly for some manufactures. Certainly I'm not knocking any brands listed all I did say was beware the internet mall ninja crowd in your selection or the ever present if I own one it's good, anything you buy is bad.;)
