THinking about committing a sin

WD-40 and a rag ...... / or any light coat of oil is all you need. Then just strip it and clean it when you get home or come out of the field / and spray a little more WD-40 on the barrel and wipe it down again.

It should be fine ( sorry about the crack with the rattle can ...) :D

Remember this is a G rated family board, guys.

No more dissing of Vettes or gals named Tiffany.

As for the question at hand, Karma is Karma and chopping that BT99 will get you at least one incarnation as a trap boy at a club full of accident prone, no-tipping, idiots.

Maybe a couple.

If you want a woods runner single shot, get something like.....

An older H&R, NEF, Stevens, Winchester 37A(Sorry,the 37s are all gone to card shooters)or even a Brazilian job like Rossi in the gauge you want.

Fit a premium pad(Trust me) and if you insist, trim the barrel back to the legal minimum of 18".

Find appropriate ammo in 2 3/4",no Maggie Numbs, and have fun with a 4.5 to 5.5 lb tool that redefines the term "Hard Kicker".

As for finishes, Robar, etc, provide a variety of hard, rust resistance surface treatments that work well but will get you back much more than the nominal cost of the arm itself.

A couple things I've noted from seeing these projects for a very long time.....

A single shot with 28" barrel and standard stock is a skosh shorter than a riot barreled 870 also with a standard stock. That 870 is hardly long and ungainly.

The little NEF 12 gauge here has a 28" barrel, handles like Zorro's rapier and weighs 5 lbs, 9 oz. Carries like a walking stick.

It does kick very well, but the standard loads I use are 7/8 oz reloads and the back end has a KickEez attached.

A 20 gauge set up similarly would be slightly lighter and even more nimble.

And a wipedown with a rag and Mobil One keeps it the way it began.

HTH....

Have a buddy interested who has made me a fair tentative offer.
If I have to sell it I'd like to know it goes to a good home...

Going to my favorite fun store next week, see what they offer for the H&R 12.

I lke the H&R, but I don't see it as an "heirloom" gun. All the rest of my collection I do.

cut the gun. so what about its value. when i kick everybody is gonna run to the gun store/pawn shop/speed shop with all my toys anyway. good luck to those who think otherwise.
....btw the most of the old neat guns i have were purchased after somebody else sold them at a estate sale anyway. bobn

bobn, I want to talk to your kids when you kick it

If that's the case, please have your children/personal representative contact me after you kick it. I'd be happy to make some new acquisitions at the expense of someone unwise enough to pawn off a bunch of good guns.
:D

I am also going to see an amazing tool and die guy tomorrow. I am going to ask him a little bit about what it would take to manufacture a line of 12 gauges/single shots that were stainless or hard chromed but otherwise followed the H&R design closely. He pheasant hunts regularly, so maybe he will give me a good idea.

Response from my favorite gun-store

Thanks for checking . Sorry , Olde English doesn't have much experience in plating or custom finishes other than for handguns . Robar , Checkmate , Birdsong are a few companies offering finishes . However the cost would exceed the price you paid for the H&R . They can run $200-300 on a handgun sized gun .

For rust prevention we have found nothing better than RIG . We use it in our store to protect our display guns from sweaty hands and also have used it on our family firearms since the 1950's . Yo may have noticed some palm sized sheepskin rags behind our gun counter . These are treated with RIG and sell for about $10 .

How long will one of these sheepskins last me? It seems the actual wax is no longer available from retailers. Any other thoughts?
