I'm thinkin about getting one, call it inadeqecy or whatever, but i want one for mainly target/plinking etc. any reccomendations? i have a taurus .357 and love it, but i notice they only list 2 .44's on their site?

Why not a Ruger Blackhawk? I've started pining for a BH in .30 Carbine with some sort of pistol scope (Leupold?).

There are plenty of options available in a BH. Plus, you can't break one--a perfect reloader's gun.

There are many options out there. Of course, you will mostly see the Ruger BlackHawk/RedHawks being recommended, and even more so, the Smith 629, etc.

I have two Taurus M44's and I love them. I reload and have been shooting 100% (Never Exceed) loads in them (well... the ported one anyways... NOT the 2 1/2" non-ported snubbie). No problems.

Get whatever grabs you. If it's ruggedness, then the Ruger is probably the way to go. If it's style and resale value, then the Smith. But don't be fooled into thinking that ONLY Roger or Smith are choices. I've also seen a lot of reasonable used Dan Wessons around here too...

Unless you have to have a maggie, I'd suggest looking at 44 Specials as well, especially if you reload. The Smith Specials are as strong as their maggies, and the round is lots of fun to shoot. The bragging rights of owning one aren't too bad either.

just my 2 cents :)

"...but i want one for mainly target/plinking etc...."

Target? Plinking? A .44 MAG?

Yeh, uh-huh, right.

It's OK just to say you WANT one - no other justification is needed. Remember, this is TFL - everyone here understands these kind of things.

I own a Smith 629 Classic with a 6 1/2" barrel and it is one of the most accurate centerfire handguns I have ever owned. The 29 Classic I once owned was also a fantastic shooter.

Owned a couple of Ruger Super Blackhawks - nice guns - only drawback is the creepy trigger pull which seems to be the norm in all the Blackhawks , Super Blackhawks and Single-Sixes I have fired. The 10 1/2" SB I owned was the mildest 44 Mag I ever shot as far as felt recoil and muzzle blast.

Also owned 2 Ruger Super Redhawks - both 7 1/2". The first one was back in the late 80's - one of the best Ruger revolvers I ever had the pleasure to shoot! The second one bought in 2000 was a lemon and it was eventually replaced by my 629.

Greeting's All,

strange 246, Think No Longer My Friend!:D  :)

Like 629 shooter, I own a Smith & Wesson 629-5 "Classic"
.44 magnum with a 5" barrel. Besides the things that has
already been stated, my 629-5 came straight from the S&W
factory with a beautiful buttery smooth double action.

Undoubtedly, one of the finest new Smith's I have ever
seen; and it ain't even a DX model! :D With a few
handloads and the use of the Hogue "Monogrips" it is
as tame as a .38 Special. So, I suggest that you take
one for a "test drive" at your favorite dealer today!

I have a Model 29, SBH 4 5/8", SRH 71/2", 22-45 in 22 cal, a S&W
32 cal and a 7 1/2" SBH which is my favorite. The Rugers are tops. I still want the polished SS Bisley though. You won't go wrong with any of the guns mentioned in these posts.:)

I have a Ruger Redhawk and a Smith 629. Both have 4" barrels. (I had the Ruger cut down.) The Smith is a masterpiece.

But will the Ruger really handle the heavy loads better? Not sure. After about 300 300gr shots, my Redhawk cylinder wants to bind. But I wont shoot them at all in the Smith. I use the 270gr Speer JFP in the Smith, loaded per Speer Manual 13. So far, so good. adk

I like the versatility! IF YOU HANDLOAD! I load a Keith 250 gr. SWC, with 5 gr. of Bullseye, for a really mild and fun load. The same bullet, with 7.5 or 8 gr. of Unique, is a really fine defense load. Then load some 2400 behind the same bulet and you've got a real nice hunting load. It's hard to beat!

A Ruger Super Black Hawk is near indestructible and lighter kicking that you would think.

Just be sure to get after market grips so that your middle finger doesn't get pounded by the trigger guard.

thanks guys

Thanks for the tips guys! I think I'll be taking a ride to the shops this weekend and take a look around and see what grabs me!!

Zeus, .44 for plinking? most definatly! ever shot a milk jug full of ice with one? did it with my uncle's .44 and was hooked since! :D
that was like 8 years ago and for no good reason i've never bought a .44, i own or have owned most every other caliber at one time or another, but....well....i guess it must be a manhood thing ;)

Strange246; Hey, no offense intended.

My .44M is a Ruger 7.5" SRH that's never even been near a .44 Special case! Put's a grin on my face every time I pull the trigger. So as far as I'm concerned, everyone should have a .44 Mag - and for whatever reason they please.

I have a Smith & Wesson model 629 with a 6.5-inch barrel--purchased before the company jumped into bed with the Snopes Clinton-Liar Gore régime--and can assure you it's a great plinker. I load lead .44 caliber semi-wadcutters down to very mild .44 special levels, and it's accurate as accurate could be. It's equally accurate with full house .44 magnum loads, which print slightly lower at fifty feet, but my wrist is happier with light loads.

Ruger blackhawk gets my vote, Most accurate revo I've ever fired.

Most target shooting is gonna be from the single action anyway.
