Sounds like your problem is nothing that frequent trips to a range can't fix.

Took my wife out to the range one day a while back to try out handguns, just for the hell of it. I started with 9mm's, a couple Glocks, Sigs, S&W autos, Colt 1911, our personal HK USP40. She's in the middle of shooting a long-slide Glock 24C (has to be one of the sweetest shooting autos I've had the pleasure to handle), turns her head to me and asks "Do they have any bigger guns? I mean, like Dirty Harry big.". LOL 
I said "uhh...yeah I'm sure there's something back there...hold that thought" and went to look for something a little more intimidating. I came back with a stainless Colt Anaconda in 44mag. That was a bit much 
But she's not fooled by hollywood anymore, I can tell you that.
In the end she proclaimed that she liked out USP40 with a Houge grip sleeve the best. Me too. She gets her own Taurus 85UL in a day or two here (many thanks to a fine TFL member for selling us his). Although I'm expecting she'll want to step up to something a little more impressive right quick .

I suspect that my wife (like yours) will probably want to step up to something bigger than the 9mm after more shooting time. It might take a while but I can see her wanting a .45 eventually.
My job is going to be keeping her interested and getting her lots of practice time.
