VPC WEBSITE BACK ONLINE
Monday morning the VPC learned that its Online Resource Center web site,
www.vpc.org, was co-opted by a pro-gun hacker who replaced the
site with one featuring a bomb, skull and crossbones, obscenities, and links to pro-gun web sites, including the National Rifle Association. The
fake web site stated, "VPC just got shot in the head." In addition, the VPC's domain name was stolen and all e-mails sent to us during that
time—from Sunday, June 18 through early Wednesday morning June 21—were re-routed to the hacker. If you have sent us an e-mail during that
time period, please re-send it because it was not received.
In cooperation with various Internet entities, the VPC web site is now back online and will continue to serve as a resource for policymakers,
activists, the media, and the general public.
The VPC has reported this violation of federal law to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is working with law enforcement to identify the
person responsible.
The hijacking of the VPC's Online Resource Center web site is the latest example of the extremism of the pro-gun fringe. The web site serves as
the leading source in the nation for information on the gun lobby, gun industry, and gun death and injury in America. This theft of the VPC's
online identity is a gauge of the fear and desperation of pro-gunners and a measure of the lengths to which they will go. Only fact-based
information can counter the lies of the gun lobby. The gun lobby promises us that their supporters are "law-abiding citizens." This act of Internet
terrorism proves that such claims are hollow.
