The Sling and The Art of The Rifle

The 2 point slings such as the original leather military slings are fine. The 3 point tactical slings such as the HK, Giles, TacTaylor, and CQB are also very good slings. What I teach in our courses is that everything you do with a 2 point sling (including the hasty) you can do with a 3 point sling, and the 3 point sling offers many more options of usage that the 2 point does not . The biggest thing I have found and highly recommend is get a good quality sling either of leather or if it is nylon or some type of webbing then make sure it does not stretch.

The importance of a shooting sling

I use a leather Uncle Mike's leather military sling which is the standard shooting sling. The only better probably a 3 point Ching Sling which is quicker and easier to get into. Cooper's book is on point with the proper use of a sling. It is amazing the only mondern "gun writers" who propound the use of a sling for shooting (properly) are Cooper, Wayne Van Zwoll and the late Finn Aagaard. Most don't and the others that do, don't explain the proper use.

A word of caution. Use of a sling can change the point of impact unless your barrel is free floated. I asked Cooper about this and he felt this change was not significant and not to worry about it. The change maybe an inch or two which has been my experience with my non-free floated barrels. Aagaard believed one should free float if a sling were to be used. I tend to agree with Cooper.

Nevertheless, proper use of a sling from a supported position does it in fact improve my shooting significantly.
