Sounds like you are the one in lockstep with the mainstream media (who don't know "Torture" from "Tiddlywinks"). 
"Appearance"? Perception is reality, huh? If so, we are well past sunk.
To "stand against" something, well, wouldn't it be wise to define it in clear terms? Every paperboy I know has had a dog bark at him...OMG IT'S TORTURE!!!
And if the CIA tries to wipe thier butt, someone from the NY Times will publish it, putting the worst possible "spin" on it.
