The Ruger Redhawk is back

My 4 inch (not 4.25 inch) 45LC Redhawk will shoot a 345 grain Beartooth bullet at 1235 fps with a heavy load of H-110.

This is really about as heavy a load as I'd want to carry for bear defense. In the article I mentioned above, the bear apparently had the guys' arm and hand in it's mouth and the guy pulled his 44M with his free hand and shot the bear 3 times. The heavy magnum loads are hard to shoot with one hand.

Here's a news report about the bear attack

I love the way the grips look on the RedHawks (except the hogue rubber grips) they're have beautiful lines. The RedHawks are one of the better looking double action revolvers. That Talo snubnose gorgeous.

In my case I have loaded the 275gr Hard Cast bullets described above, but have brought the velocity down to about 1150fps. That is pretty controllable, but still pretty stout!!

I am with some of the rest of you on the .45 Colt. Now this one I would buy. With the heavier loads in .45 Colt that most revolvers will not handle for long, the Redhawk will. It will make the .44 magnum look tame.

Please tell me the Redhawk is coming back in .45 Colt. I heard not.

I have a blue 5.5 inch that will never leave the collection. O lucked into one for a good price. I had been considering a SP101, but after seeing this new snub I'm thinking I might have to change my mind. Those grips are going to be a handful with .44 Mag, on my 5.5 I changed to Pachmayr presentation grip, and those are the only ones that were truly comfortable for it. I take it none of the current grips in production will fit the snub?

9ballbilly - Glad it's back! Too late for me now but once upon a time I really wanted a blue 5.5". At the time I went with a 6" DW instead. Not sure I would make the same choice again but since the flux capacitor in my time machine is burnt out we'll never know.

But geezers have the best gun collections.;)

I love the .44 Magnum Ruger RH! I bought a 4.2 inch RH years back and it is still my favorite revolver. If I could only have one revolver, it would be a RH. I am looking at getting a 5.5 (longer sight radius) now that they are in production again.

My LGS had a new 5.5 inch and I have to say, the action both DA and SA were terribly gritty and clunky. It was no where near as smooth as my 4.2 inch or my fathers 7.5 inch. I passed on the gun it was that bad. I hope Ruger is not shorting on quality control to increase production..?!

The whole .44 Mag vs .45 Colt has been beaten to death in previous forums. I already load for the .44 Mag and have gallons of brass, bullets, dies, molds, and other .44 Mag revolvers.

I just cannot see the advantage of loading another caliber and scrounging brass for another caliber that is similar to the .44 Mag performance. I also do not believe in trying to make a caliber something it is not. If you want higher than .44 Mag performance out of a .45 Colt, get a .454 Casull.

I'm a fan of the big Rugers. The trigger on my SRH is much nicer in single action than the RH. However, the RH fits my hand so much nicer.

No .429s here. These all say 45.

I actually have use for a 44 magnum snubby because, "I'm constantly running into The Four Horseman and um..."

Yeah...

This is my choice gun for the apocalypse...

That snub is absolutely beautiful! And as others have said 45Colt would be my 1st choice if available.

How apropos, I just picked up a 5.5" in .44 yesterday! I traded a Sig 227 Carry that I never quite warmed up to. It will be a good mate to my 3" SP. Never been a huge revolver guy, but I do love the Ruger 'tanks' for woods work.

To each his own, but I'm with codefour. I already have several .44 Mag handguns. I don't own any .45 Colt guns, but any future purchases would probably include an SAA or clone. I wouldn't want to have my kids (or future senile me) worry about grenading a gun by simply loading the proper caliber ammunition.

For me the Redhawk is a .44Mag and only a .44 Mag.

One of my very favorite guns is a SS Redhawk 5.5" in .41 Magnum. Really hard to beat that one.

My only "issue" is the big square grip frame. Limit to just how small the grips can be. The factory ones are sort of round in cross section and actually feel good in my hands. But they tear a hole at the base of my thumb in short order. (Yeah, I know... gloves... but it's hot here!) I have a big 9.5" SRH and it is a great hunting gun. I can appreciate the more conventional appeal of the Redhawk but seriously, they should have converted the Redhawk over to the GP100/SRH "post" long ago. Then you could use a vast array of different grips. I suppose the round butt on the new snub is recognizing that but trying to take an intermediate position. Better... but I would prefer to be able to use GP100/SRH grips.
