The reason I love my S&W 4006

4006

Inactive
Three months ago, I came home from work to find my door half way open. As I went inside I saw some guy holding my Smith and Wesson and pointing it at me. When he pulled the trigger, he realized the safety was still on and worked the gun for almost a minute trying to keep his hand on the trigger and take off the safety (those of you with a S&W, you know what the safty on one is like). When he gets the safety off, what he does next suprises the h*ll out of me. He drops the magazine. At this point, im just laughing at him as he attempts to pull the trigger. I run to my gun closet and grab my berreta and chase him out of my apartment. I couldn't call the police because what will they do, fill out a report and call it a day. If he would've found my Glock or my berreta, I wouldn't be around to tell my story(thank god for that magazine safety and that tough safety). My roomate, who couldn't stand guns, was convinced he needs one. He picked out a glock 19 and loves it. Anyone else had an experience like this?

No, but I too own a 4006. I do like it a bunch. Just too bad that I'll never buy another S&W firearm again.

Smith & Wesson must die.

Heck even if the guy knew how to work your smith does not mean it would have fired. Smith's reliability is a game of chance some times they work normally they don't

LOL. Agreed. It MIGHT fire the first shot, but it would likely jam the next shot (that is what my Smith pistols did anyway).

NEVER had a jam with a third generation S&W pistol (4006, 4006TSW, 3913, 3913TSW, 4013TSW, 4513TSW, 1006, 5906TSW) -- did experience some malfunctions with a second generaion S&W (659) but NEVER with the third generation models and we're talking about 200-300 rounds per month!

I agree, the manual safety and the magazine disconnect are one of the reasons why I like S&W pistols as much as I do. For a discussion of Smith & Wesson products (not their policies), come join other S&W owners at a forum that I co-moderate on the Smith & Wesson Firearms Enthusiast's Web Board, which is in no way affiliated with the Smith & Wesson Company of Springfeild, MA.

You just stood and watched somebody who had tried to shoot you, mess with a gun for a minute knowing that he was going to try again if he got the gun working????? And you were laughing? HMMMM.

Fud,

I agree with you that the safety and magazine disconnector safety can be very useful (like in this gentleman's case). These "extra safeties" sure saved this gentleman's life. Like others have said, "whatever works for the individial".

But, (for me) that is more parts to break and more to learn (for example, having to remember to "flip safety switch to fire gun" while your in a panick after someone is attacking you. With a simple revolver-like DA/SA semi-auto, its just a matter of picking up the gun and pulling the trigger. Since all my handguns are locked in a safe when not in use, it is very unlikely a perpetrator is getting his hands on my weapons to use against me.

Quantum Singularity:

S&W makes more different TYPES of pistols than anyone else in the world! For every traditional DA/SA pistol that is in their line, they have a DAO version (3913 --> 3953; 4013 --> 4053, etc.). Additionally, they've got all-steel models, alloy models, fixed sights, adjustable sights, night sights, etc.; for just about every model in just about every serious defensive caliber (the .357SIG stands out as being missing and they briefly introduced it but just as quickly pulled it from the shelf for reasons that I would be interested in learning if anyone has that information to share).

I will not fault someone who prefers a DAO pistol because as you wisely pointed out, this is personal preferrence. I ONLY own tradtional DA/SA Smith & Wesson pistols because this is what I received my initial professional training on nearly two decades ago. I've had to fire in self defense situations and I never had a problem with the safeties -- as the sight goes on the target, the thumb flips off the safety without me even consciously thinking about it. When the gun is lowered, the thumb flips the safety back on -- again, without even consciously thinking at it.

Everyone does what works best for them. Whether it be SA, DA/SA or DAO. I have carried SA and from time to time I still carry DAO but I prefer DA/SA.

Good shooting to you & keep it in the X-ring, FUD.

FUD,

I agree, I like SA/DA pistols better too.

However, I have never mastered the safeties on 1911's or Smith & Wesson pistols. I end up forgetting to disengage the safety at the range, pull the trigger...and nothing happens. If it was a real life shooting, I would have lost several seconds of advantage.

NEVER had a jam with a third generation S&W pistol

Thats great FUD but thats not the norm. ALso as for 357 sig ammo being pulled from the shelves that BS.

patrick66,
I have met lots of people from all walks of life that think they know everything. I don't believe that is restricted to any one profession.

patrickt66

I don't know everything just a lot. Seriously we all have different backgrounds and experence. And I tend to share mine maybe in a less than tactfull way somtimes but oh well thats life.

PAT/355sigfan, I own almost a dozen third generation pistols and I have never experienced a jam or a failure to feed with them. Since I purchased them at different times from different dealers and in different parts of the country, I would think that there is enough randomness there to reviel problems with their line. I'm not claiming this to be a scientific study but just looking at it logically, one would think that if there are so many problems with their guns as people say, I should have encountered some of them based on the randomness of my purchases.

The only problem that I am experiencing is with their new TSW line -- when I chamber a round by racking the slide, it dislodges a second bullet from the magazine in addition to the one round that was chambered. This requires me to reload that round back into the magazine. This is only happening with their TSW models (all of the ones that I own) and it only happens when I hand chamber a round. It dosn't happen during shooting or when inserting a fresh mag with the slide locked back and releasing the slide.

With regard to ...
quote:
Originally posted by 355sigfan: ... as for 357 sig ammo being pulled from the shelves that BS ...[/quote]Neither their current catalog or their website lists any models chambered in .357SIG -- unless you know something that the rest of us don't. Their Sigma line starting coming out in .357SIG briefly and at the time it was announced that there would be a .357SIG model in their compact & full-size pistols but that never happened as far as I know and even the .357SIG Sigma model was dropped.

Again, if you have additional info about this, please share what you know.

FUD.

Hello,

I carry a DAO SW4586 daily, on and off duty. It has really grown on me. It has never malfunctioned. It has some excellent features(factory dehorned, bevelled mag well, front strap serrations, changeable grip angles, nice wide grip tang, big fixed tritium sights). If you don't like the mag safety, there are ways to get around it in a tactical reload situation. I would prefer it in an alloy frame, with light mounting grooves, and this model is available. In my experience, the .45 acp SWs(4506,4566,4586)are very reliable. Note that LAPD now gives it's officers the .45 acp option in the form of the 4506(I believe the 4566 and 4516 may be optional). The LAPD show on Discovery Channel shows that these SWs are being carried by a LOT of cops, by their choice. Chicago gives cops the option of the 4586. On www.tacticalforums.com, there is a guy with mucho leo experience from California, and he states that CHP has had excellent results with the 4006, some examples easily going 50k rounds, and also having excellent results with(gasp!) 180gr subsonic JHPs(W-W, Rem).

stay safe,

Dave

FUD I misunderstood you I thought you ment ammo manufactures were pulling 357 sig ammo off the shelves. Patrick I can also be inflamatory at times. I took no offense to your post. With smiths auto's it seems to be luck of the draw and those I know with them have not been as lucky.
