I feel certain that someone here will have the correct info, but it does seem to me that several prominent Civil War veterans who served the Confederacy served in Congress and at the pleasure of the President. As the 14th amendment was ratified in 1868, how did these people get away with it?
Not that I think Kerry is worthy of the Senate seat he now holds, but I'm not certain the 14th amendment can be tossed at him, either. Anyone?
