the perfect rifle for home protection... new to the long guns!

At night, I'd use the Mosin. The flame belching out of the barrel when you fire it will scare the hell out of the bad guys...

I think the best firle for home defence is some thing small and light. I would go with some thing in a short barrel (18 inches or less). If I has to pick it would be a lever action marlin in 357 magnum with a 16 inch barrel.

All that said I think that a Shot bun is the best home defence weapon. After that I would take a hand gun.

For one thing a rifle fired in a house will do a job on your ear drums. Super sonic bullet you know. All guns are going to be loud in a house , get a shot gun. or a pistol for inside work.

I'm not in to shooting people for property loss.

BUT: Before you deside on an AK or SKS, for shooting 200 yards, I'd strongly consider barrowing one and shooting them at 2oo yards.

Sure (I guess) you might hit a man size target at 200 yards with an AK/SKS, but what are the chances of getting a full man size target to expose itself when you're shooting at it.

At 200 yards if I couldnt keep all shoots in a 6 inch circle, I'd find another gun.

Like I said, I'd try them out before I'd spend the money for one. Surely you can find someone in the area that would let you pop a few rounds.

I live in the country, and have tons of guns to choose from, but for varmints harrassing my critters, I keep a bolt gun handy. You're normal every day hunting rifle would probably work pretty good unless you do a LOT of shooting with iron sights.

BEAT FEET

This thread brought back to mind an incident that happened back in the mid 70s . I was in the excavating business back then , and kept my equipment at my house . I awoke to a sound that I couldn't place , so I got up and went to the open window in my room , I could hear hushed voices . The next sound I hear is a gas can being set down on the ground . Darn I had gas thieves in my yard ! I went to the gun cabinet and threw a loaded clip into my 760 .308 . Now I don't want you folks to think I did anything real dangerous . Just to the east of my place is a 2000 Ft. high mountain with no roads or homes between me and the mountain . I tiptoed out the back door and walked right up to the front of the truck they were syphoning gas from . I put two rounds into the mountain ! Now them two fellers let out some hoots and some other noises I'd never heard before , and they headed towards the gravel road out front . Just as they hit the road , I touched off another round , they were having a hard time getting their feet to move them along as fast as they wanted to go . They ran down the hill as fast as they could , falling quite frequently . I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants , I'm thinking maybe they peed their pants too . Now I know dirtbags are lazy , so I'm thinking they probably parked up on top of the hill which was only about 50 yards away . I walked up the hill and sure enough there was a car with two young ladies sitting in it waiting for their boyfriends to get back with the gas . They heard the shots of course , and asked me what happened . I said that I'd just caught a couple guys stealing gas out of my trucks . Of course their next question was "did you shoot them " no I says , I missed . Unless I miss my guess , I told them , those guys will be down at the bottom of the hill hiding under that little bridge over the brook . Do either of you girls drive ? yes we both do . I says "good" go pick them guys up , and tell them I won't be shooting in the air next time . They left me 4 metal gas cans , the old equipment oil type with the spout and filler cap on them . Thanks for the chuckle !

Any LEOs here please add your advice.

I'm in Texas and we have the Castle Doctrine. You can be shot for stealing property and if you are you loose your right to sue in State Court.

I'm not in to shooting people for property loss.

I had a Burglary once and lost $20,000 worth of property that I worked real hard to earn. Some scumbag wants my property, to take what I earned and what I bought to take care of my family, well nope their sorry life isn't worth my stuff.

I'm bowing out of this thread.

My understanding of Castle Doctrine in TX is that you may use deadly force if you believe you had to in order to protect yourself or another from violence of certain categories. Also note that "robbery" and "burglary" are 2 different things.

Would suggest anyone reading it and considering this situation in their own life to...

-read up on the laws in your state
-know how the prosecutor/courts are in your area
-understand that when you pull the trigger in a shooting, you are beginning a potentially lengthy and expensive experience

Let's do everything we can to avoid having to ever be in this situation and if you must you deadly force, do so only as a last resort because the effects on all will be long lasting.

Deej, if you are the IT field, why not set up some video cams, or game cams, and record pics of who is coming onto your land and committing larceny. You might get recognizable faces, vehicles, license plates, etc. Then hand the problem over to the local LEO.

the OP just wants to know what he can get for $700 or less that is accurate and powerful out to 200 yards. Look into the Mini 14. it shoots .223/5.56. you can get one used for $400 put a good scope on it and a "strut" (for accuracy) detachable 30 round mags, light weight, unequaled reliability, and they dont call it a Ranch Rifle for nothing. next would be an AR, they are (from what i am told) are a little more accurate but a little more $.
