The perfect citizens revolver!

After many decades oftrial and error trying to locate the "average Mans Gun" I think that I finally found the one for me!
I had gone through a.45 LLama Especial (Excellent Pistol!!) Wore it totally out! I then went to a 6" Model 66 for a short time. The barrel was too long for any sort of carry, the thig kicked like a mule with full house ,357's and when I read that the frame was too light for a constant diet of Mabnums , I sold it!
I then went to a Ruger 4 5/8" Vaquero S/A (a natural to me since I was brought up with S/A's)
The Vaquero is built like a tank, unfortunatelly it is a bit heavy for all types of carry but it is built to handle a lifetime of full Magnums plus it just loves the <38 Special's! I carry mine in a ewplica 1880's sholder rig and this sistributes the weight evenly
Still a little too large???
About 2 months ago I fell into a deal on a Model 20HB and I think I have finally foud what I was looking for! 4 inch barrel short enough to conceal discreetly, a powerfull, heavy bullet cartrige with many options of high preformance Personal Defense specialty loads and the old stand by 158 gr soft lead bullet of various styles! Low recoil due to the heavy barrel and very good accuracy!
I can see why thhe Model 20 was the "stsndsrd" for so many agencys and Governments! The Model 10 isjust one of the perfect ones made to shoot and shoot well wit low maintance andmade in a dependable frame with good parts that seldom fail when under the pressure of a real gunfight!
S&W did their homework on this model. Starting way back in 1899 with thw origonal swing out cylinder models through tody's release of the Model 10 from the Classic SHops release of the Model 10! History speaks for itself! Why mess with success?
For a back-up/reload, I carry a Model 36,
Back to the Model10 with proper care and maintance you can't break it, it shoots a proven manstopper and is as dependaable as a clawhammer!

You can't just say you have a model 10 and a model 36 without giving us some pics to drool over! What year are they?

Love my model 10's. apparently my wife does too, since she has claimed one for her nightstand.
I still have my favorite one though. Purchased 2 yrs ago $200

Gotta disagree and I don't do "revolver lovefests". (links to post #917 of the longest revolver lovefest I have seen.) The primary reason to have a revolver is magnum power*. The Model 10 lacks a pinned front sight, a rear sight (requires milling to add one), no chamfered charge holes and is a K-Frame.

Will the gun work? Sure! Use it in good health--but it is not the perfect revolver.

And...we need range reports. :D

There's just so much right with the S&W k-frames. I have several and they're some of my favorites.

For a "general purpose" revolver, it's hard to beat a Model 10/64. I have four - two blued snubbies and two stainless with 4" barrels.

It's not the perfect handgun,,,

It's not the perfect handgun,,,
But it closer than most.

It's the gun for those who believe simple is better.

I love my Model 15,,,
But in any survival scenario,,,
The simpler designs are often the sturdiest.

We can debate the fine points until the cows come home,,,
But the gun has been around for over 100 years,,,
People are still buying the Model 10 & 64,,,
And they're still in the S&W catalogue.

There must be some virtue in them.

The term Citizens Handgun may or may not be valid,,,
But if every American citizen owned and could use a Model 10,,,
We, as a society and as a country, would be very dangerous to mess with.

Arming them with different types of handguns,,,
Even if they were hi-capacity semi-autos,,,
Wouldn't make that much difference.

At least that's my not-so-humble opinion.

If there was a contest to name the Iconic American Handgun,,,
My vote would go for the M&P/Model 10,,,
Even over the Colt SAA.

Because of it's simplicity of use and maintenance,,,
It's what I recommend as a starter gun for non-enthusiasts.

I agree that a SW K-frame with a four inch barrel is just about the perfect revolver. You can quibble between models, but that's like getting to choose which finalist in a Miss America contest you would like to take home. Even if you have a .357 magnum and don't want to shoot heavy loads though it, you can use .38 specials.

As far as balance in my hand, I like the pencil barrel K-frames. Here's one of my Model 10s:

I'd tag the Model 19 as the perfect revolver because it'll handle .357 loads otherwise it would be the 15. The 19 is the closest thing to the perfect handgun. Both are super accurate and easy to shoot. They are simply the best all round handguns. I know all won't agree with me because they aren't made of plastic and don't hold 20 rounds for the spray and pray tactics used so often now days.

I will just come out and say I am a S&W fan boy. All-time favorite is a Mod. 28 But for looks and function the Mod. 19 in nickel and 4" barrel is sexy and a great shooter.

Well while I'm a S&W fan...

The 3 inch GP-100 to me is the best.

My 'Canadian' one above is extra sturdy, can be field stripped in the wild without tools (something my S&Ws do need), and is made to take tons of real .357s as well as boat loads of .38s.

I agree that it's the one handgun that comes very close to being perfect for so many tasks.

My personal "perfect" revolver so far is a 4'' Ruger Security Six.

If there was a contest to name the Iconic American Handgun,,,
My vote would go for the M&P/Model 10,,,
Even over the Colt SAA.

I would give the Colt the edge over the Model 10 but it would be close. Throw the 1911 in the mix and you easily have the top three.

Perfect hand gun, it might be for you but not for everyone. Great gun the 10. Too large for some (Beretta Jet fire is perfect) and not enough gun for others (you have to carry a 44 mag). Not enough rounds for some (Glock 19 with 30 round mag) and takes too long to reload for others (unless you’re Jetty Miculek).
Me for a small revolver I like is the Bulldog, but I sure would be happy carrying your 10.
Nice!

I've owned or been issued quite a few 4" service revolvers over the past 35 years and several stand out. One was an old skinny barrel Model 10 that just happened to perfectly regulated for 25 yards and I could hit the end of a beverage can at will with it. I also had an old Colt Army Special that was equally well zeroed and would keep six FBI loads on a silver dollar.

Finally there was a 4" heavy barrel .357 Magnum Ruger Speed Six. That one was a squirrel gun with 148 wadcutters and good to 80-90 yards with Federal 125 grain Magnum JHP's

Those 3", short-shroud GP-100's are fine guns too, Deaf Smith.

I'll have to second the Model 19 4" as being perhaps the most perfect revolver ever made.

I've said it many times that it's the PERFECT combination of power, weight, size, controlability, functionality, flexibility, etc.

If I had to choose one, and only one, revolver to accompany me for the rest of my life, it would be the Model 19 4".

That said, just about ANY of the K frames are a good choice for the title. My second choice would be a Model 10 4" because if its slightly increased durability of being partnered with the .38 Spl. (Model 19s have had known issues with a steady diet of .357 Mag ammo) and the fixed sights (nothing to get out of adjustment or break at an inopportune moment).

I'll chip in another vote for Model 15

'Combat Masterpiece' is an understatement. It's impossible not to shoot this handgun well.
