The Patriot -- I Gotta See This Movie!

Believe it or not, the Stephen Hunter from the Washington Post quoted above as bashing the movie is the same Stephen Hunter who writes the Bob Lee Swagger books. Go figure...

It's worth the time to pull up the Washington Post and read Hunter's review. I get the impression that he was bothered by what he considered a lack of authenticity.

RikWriter,

My reasons for believing aristocratic arrogance to be one of the reasons for these tactics are, at best, controversial. I should have made the point a different way. For example, remember when Cornwallis said in essence, "Your advancement is solely dependent on *my* good graces!"? He was expressing the essential difference separating feudalism, socialism and bureaucracy from American free enterprise in which one advances by personal achievement.

If you are interested in my reasons for blaming arrogance you are invited to private e-mail bentley@millenicom.com or look for a similar thread at:

Thanks for your comment.

“The Patriot is right-wing hogwash bathed in an olde-timey golden glow,” writes Arion Berger of the Washington City Paper. “Now the disgruntled, home-schooling, SUV-buying, pro-militia-but-cautious-suburban-family-values working man has a movie to call his own."

If Berger has included "NRA member and gun toting nut", he would have described me to a fare-thee-well. And that is just the way I like it. :p

Hey Shotgun;
Arion Berger makes me laugh, because this so-called movie critic obviously doesn't like movies, and he does a great job of finding ways to push the buttons of anyone who does. What a complete and total loser. Still, he makes me laugh.

USP45usp:
USP? Now why would a person professing to be a patriotic American who "loves pissing off Brits" be using a British gun?<GG> Umm...you DO know that H&K is now British, don't you, old chap?

We went & saw it Saturday afternoon. We both said, "Thumbs Up!!!"
I personally think that every gunowner should go see it to support the movie for guns, freedom & rights that the movie portrays.

Went and saw this movie on Sunday night.

I went through an emotional roller coaster from start to finish.

Left the theater shaking my head and wondering what has become of that spirit in America.

A magnificent movie, in my opinion. The last movie I saw before this one was Gladiator, and the two are quite similar in nature.

If you haven't seen them both, do yourself a favor and block out six hours and head to the theater.

If these aren't the two best films of the year, then someone, somewhere, has his head firmly ensconced betwixt his buttocks.

quote:
“This film is about personal freedom - which many people take for granted today,” says Mel Gibson.[/quote]

There were many threads on TFL prior to this film's release, questioning Gibson's perspective on freedom and the RKBA. Many people defended the man, as did I, but I did so with my fingers crossed.

I have been absolutely ecstatic with Gibson's public comments since the film's release. From what I've seen, this man has faced the inevitable criticisms squarely, and has yet to back off one inch.

Boy, have we needed an actor like this.

I give the man almost no chance at an Oscar for The Patriot, and I hope he can live with that. However, I also believe it is altogether possible that many people will see the courage and truth of Gibson's character, not to mention his own persona. We may indeed be seeing the rebirth of another 'John Wayne', albeit in a 21st Century mold.

I am a Gibson customer for life. I'll see this movie for a third time before it leaves the theaters, and it will definitely become part of my small video collection [anchored by Braveheart ;) ].

I do hope that Mr. Gibson understands the fine role he has begun to play in the most important human story we'll ever hear ... that of human liberty and freedom.
