The Nerve!!!!

Hey all,

I've got to say that right now I'm pretty upset, so I apologize if I sound one sided or arrogant. I just got my final paper back, on how we have a right to defend ourselves under the Constitution. The guys remarks:
"The Constitution applied to property and slave owning white males when it was written, this argument gets vapid quickly" Well I guess the rest of our amendments don't apply to us either, since we no longer own slaves and we have a diverse population!
It goes on... "A gun wouldn't do much good since criminals have them too." That comment right there is just asinine, if the criminals have guns, would you not want to be armed yourself? Victim or armed citizen?
And finally "No one needs an assault weapon to defend himself, a shotgun does the job better." "Our governement sells arms to the world, hence the NRA is run by the ones you think are your enemies... you are their pawn."
I swear, this guy either has to be off his rocker, not in touch with reality, completely blind, or all the above! I can't believe he wrote those comments and tells me that I'm wrong on my views and I feel we have a right to defend ourselves, our loved ones and our property. Can you believe this?

LOL. More or less. I am in an advanced degree program for Business Science. My company offers free night class on the premises. They bring in these college professors who seem to have their own agenda, can you tell?

So did this visiting "teacher" grade your final paper? Was the outcome of his grade much less than you were expecting?

If this jerk is employed by an accredited university or college, it may be prudent to submit a copy to their board of ethics review with a complaint about his "politically motivated and unprofessional" remarks.

With regards to his comments;
The Constitution applied to property and slave owning white males when it was written, this argument gets vapid quickly

Is his argument that because we no longer own slaves the Constitution is no longer applicable? Would he permit authorities to come into his office AND home for a random search? I think not. Or is he implying that the document does not protect non-property-owning non-whites? That would seem not only racist, but contrary to established legal doctrines.

A gun wouldn't do much good since criminals have them too.

No one needs an assault weapon to defend himself, a shotgun does the job better.

Our government sells arms to the world, hence the NRA is run by the ones you think are your enemies... you are their pawn

I might even call for a look at this teacher's mental health. He's stating (1) a non-sequitur claiming guns are useless because criminals have them; the one has no bearing on the other. (2)That constitutional rights are dependent upon "need" in contravention of the definition of "rights"; thus, since he is a vacuous pimple-headed know-it-all, he does not "need" a lawyer at trial, nor does he "need" a car when he can move closer to campus. (3)He is unable to differentiate between a domestically-focused, privately funded civil rights, educational and lobbying organization and the U.S. Government. The inability to grasp the difference indicates a state of mental incompetency not suited for higher academic study.

Of course, that's just my $0.02 worth.

So what. This is stuff left over from the 80s. What knee jerk liberals don't understand is that there are not any perfect systems. So what if Jefferson owned slaves; the Constitution is still the best design for government in the world.

If you dig far enough, you can find dirt on anybody. People are imperfect.

Entertaining.

Ask the fellow which accredited law school he attended for his law degree?

Honestly, though, I wouldn't sweat this too much unless he's tanking your grade for it.

Make two photocopies.

Send one to the head of the department.

Send another to the presiding ethics committee.

Sit back; enjoy the show.

Take it from a recent law school graduate: The closer people are to academia, the more whacked-out their political views, AND the more devoutly they cling to them. If you expect to make good grades in school, then you HAVE to consider your audience when you formulate your arguments.

As a person reliant on the subjective grading of another person, you never want to tie your grades to your ability to change someone's whacked-out political views. Before you submit a paper on right-to-self-defense/gun-legislation/hippie-liberal-agendas, you MUST consider whether your grader will have a strong view about these things, and whether they will be sympathetic to your argument. If they won't be sympathetic, then you're just shooting yourself in the foot by expressing your viewpoints in the assignment, thereby BEGGING for them to mark you down so that they can vent their frustration on their own whacked-out political agendas. Better, instead, to pick a new topic.

You should not have chosen this argument. I know, it sucks that you have to tailor your arguments to satisfy your prof's whacked-out political views. But unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast. Next time, weigh carefully the views of your audience before you jump into the debate with both arms swinging.

I learned a long time ago "you pass the professor , not the course". If you were taking Eng. Comp. and the Professor liked sailing you can bet that we're talking Americas' Cup . If they liked hiking we're talking the Grand Canyon (Bright Angel Trail) . It doesn't matter what YOU think . Think of it as a first date . "You like to paint ?" How interesting . You are learning Chinese ? How impressive . You have a cat ? That's cute." Etc Etc Etc ad nausem . You CAN argue with this cretin but I will remind you of one thing . It is possible to win a battle but lose the war . If this bozo thinks that a shotgun is the end all AND you feel the irrestable urge to conversate the jerk then tell him all about your Mossberg .

This is exactly what you should expect from college professors. I don't know how they manage to get all those fancy degrees without ever studying history or civics. They are all idiot savants, they poses knowledge or skill to an extraordinary degree at one specific thing, but are quite helpless and hopeless at all else in the real world.

most college professors have never left campus.they keep sticking around taking classes so that they won't have to get a job and before you know it they have a P.hd. in BS.and the college fiqures hell if you won't leave we might as well give you a "job".not all but most.

People who are involved in education are quite often liberals in the worst sense of the word. They do not understand things like protecting themselves because they live in a perfect little bubble inside their own minds and the police are just around the corner and they will come and save you before the bad guy can even pull the trigger.

It just goes to show that a college degree doesn't always indicate intelligence. Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

What college is this anyway? I want to make sure my daughter never goes there.

The final paper didn't hammer my grade too hard. I finished with a B, but I had a 3.9 GPA before this bozo. More than anything else, it hit my pride because I wanted to maintain a high GPA. The "professor" is a total democrat, anti-Bush, yeah Hillary type of person. What annoys me is that he graded my other papers the same way, if he didn't like my views, I got a bad grade, grammar was fine. So I didn't think that was very fair. I'm trying to further my education, not find out "his" political views. What exactly are they teaching in schools these days? I shutter to think!

Look, you're a Business major, right? The exact same thing happens out in the real world.

Scenario: You're meeting with a potential client, who is the head of a major international corporation based out of Japan. You walk in, and you immediately start talking about the major paradigm shift in technological research that began just prior to WWII, thus sparking the inherent superiority of the American G.I. throughout the Pacific campaign. You explain that businesses would flourish, if only we could be more like those American scientists in the 1940's.

The only problem is, the Japanese CEO just happens to be the grandson of a man who was killed by the Hiroshima bomb. He gets up and walks out of the room. You've just offended him, and more importantly, you've lost the account with the potential corporate client.

Moral of the Story: In college, they teach you lots of important facts. But, they also teach you how to interact with people. If you can't play to your audience, then you have no hope of being successful in today's world. It's that simple.

It sucks that you got a bad grade for expressing a perfectly valid viewpoint. But, try to walk away from this experience with some wisdom. From now on, always consider your audience, and learn to "pass the professor," as paratrooper says. Learning to do this is an important skill that will help you later in life.

Point taken Samurai. In my line of work though I don't deal with "sales & clients." But I understand where you are coming from. Don't misunderstand me either, I'm not the type of person that runs around telling people that I'm a CCW holder or people who don't carry guns are "victims." I try to see both points of view when possible.

That sucks, but unfortunately you do take the professor and not the class, as others have observed.

If the GPA is that important to you, and you're willing to holster your pride for a little bit, consider the following (and I say this as someone who formerly worked as a TA/instructor at a large state univeristy.)

I don't know what your 'relationship' was with the guy, but have you considered scheduling an appointment to discuss your grade and (calmly) ask him to explain to you why this wasn't a higher grade? You may have opportunities to argue that he should have given you the benefit of the doubt in some respects. I'd also emphasize that your understanding was that your instructions were to express and defend your views on the subject, and if something different was expected, you'd like the opportunity to correct that. If he wants you to write a paper arguing in favor of gun control, for instance, then do it. If he wants you to praise Karl Marx to the heavens, then do that, too. If nothing else, it will give you a greater appreciation for the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments of the other side, which is always helpful.

(Again, this is assuming that the GPA thing is ultra-important for you....if not, feel free to write him off as a looney-toon. Lord knows, that's what I usually did.)

Finally, was this a political science course? If so, why on earth were you taking it??!? As someone who burned far too many credit hours in political science classes, I promise you that nothing worthwhile is discussed or learned in an undergraduate political science class. If you have an interest in politics, sociology, or human behavior, take classes in History and Economics. That will teach you pretty much everything you need to understand about where we are now, and what is likely to come in the future. If I had to do it over again, I'd have done a double major in History and Economics, instead of International Politics and History (the latter picked up when I realized the above....)

Yea, I should've mentioned what class I was taking. It was just an Eng Comp course, nothing really special. The teacher is not actually employed by the university, but selected by them and then asked to teach the course. The more I think about it though, it's really not worth making a big thing. I'll never see the guy again and from what I understand, he will not be used anymore because apparently some other's from the class said the same things I am. He's not grading on the subject, but if he likes your paper.

Have to laugh - we get posts like this every once in awhile. Some progun young one writes a progun paper (whose quality and arguments we really can't verify) to a prof and gets slammed.

Hint - thanks for your zealotry but your job is to get a good grade. Forget the controversy, preaching and be pragmatic about it. :D

As for all college profs being anti - many are. However, you don't know all of them. Now do you?

Very true Glenn, I can however send you a copy of my paper and you can draw your own conclusions. I don't remember saying that ALL professors are anti, I didn't see it in any of my posts either. Perhaps I was insinuating, if so I apologize. Not ALL teachers/professors/educators are anti.
