The movie "The Jackal" real 20mm cannon or hollywood BS?

Fed,

Yes the original was assembled from a crutch. I don't think he mentioned the caliber (I just did a fast scan of the book), but he did say that the case was larger than normal, so it was probably a .22 magnum.

I don't want to pick nits here but with a load of 1,174 rounds and a ROF of 3900 rpm, that gives them 18 seconds of firing and they are empty.

The information I saw was a total of 16,000 lbs of stores including some rockets and a few bombs plus 6.75 tons of 30mm ammunition.

As an aside, I have heard fighter jocks giving warthog pilots LOADS of sh!t about their UGLY A-10s but they ALL lust after what they call simply "THE GUN".

Looks like you hit the nail on the head. Check out : http://members.aol.com/Stravonski/private/gun.html

where I found this quote:
"The gun gives the A-10 the ability to attack multiple targets in one mission. It is designed to fire its full ammunition load in ten two-second bursts, with one minute to cool down between bursts; in normal use, the bursts and the cool-down time would be much shorter. A one second burst from 4,000ft (1,220m) will put 40 shells into a circle little bigger than the length of a tank, and half-a dozen hits are considered to be a lethal strike."

Also, this page puts the capacity of the magazine at 1300 rounds. I re-checked my sources and did not find any reference to the weight of "The Gun's" ammunition load, though the referenced article puts each round in the 1.5 pound range.

While stationed at Ft. Campbell, I watched a pair of A-10's working with the infantry, who were using a Dragon anti-tank missile, attack target tanks on a range. The A-10's would come in and only fire a one or two second burst. At 3,900 rounds a minute rate of fire, a 2 second burst is only going to use up around 120 - 140 rounds. After seeing what that one or two second burst did to the target, it would be unnecessary overkill and a waste of ammo to fire a thousand round burst on one target. Unlike what you see on television and the movies, machine guns are not fired in long bursts. Heats up barrels too quickly and wastes ammo, A machine gun shot in a long burst starts throwing bullets way off target because of the bouncing around it does from the recoil. In a serious situation where you are being attacked in such force that long bursts are necessary in order to stop the attack, yes they will be fired until the barrels turn red.

Diz:

You are correct. I also found Stravonski's page this morning in a futile attempt to find my original source. Although the 16,000 lbs total for all stores is correct, it would appear that 1350 shells @ 1.5 lbs/shell is little over 1 ton of 30mm shells; no where near the earlier figure I had seen.

It's still one hell of a piece of work.
