The most expensive 20 rounds I have ever fired.

I sold my Kahr PM9 the other day and picked up a PM40 to replace it. I switched back to carrying my Rohrbaugh for a couple days but was itching to carry my new PM40. I could not bring myself to carry a gun I had not range tested first so I had to wait.

I finally slipped away for an hour the other day to test it out. When I got to the range I learned my membership had expired so I had to pay $50 to renew it Then I had to buy their ammo and since i wanted to test it with my carry ammo brand I had to pay $25 for a 20 count of Hornady 155gr rounds. Then I had to pay the $20 lane fee and $5 for targets.

I only had a very short time to shoot so I just ran the box of 20 through it as quickly as possible. The gun did amazingly well but after all was said and done it cost me $5 per squeeze of the trigger. :(

You renewed your membership to the range but still had to pay a $20 lane fee? Isn't the point of a range membership?

And why did you need to buy ammo from them? Couldn't find it in stock anywhere else? It's not a rental gun, so you shouldn't have to use their ammo in the range. (Every range I've been to requires you to buy ammo from them for their rental guns, but your own guns you shoot what you bring).

Many of the indoor ranges around here offer a discount on range fees to members but not many let you shoot for free with a basic membership.

Some also offer a high-level membership (with a correspondingly high membership fee) that allows free range fees, but you usually have to shoot a LOT to make that pay.

I know what you're talking about

Based upon the prices/rules that he describes, I'm pretty darn sure that I know which range that he went to. I shoot there too sometimes. And yep, you HAVE to buy their ammo. And yep, you HAVE to pay a lane fee even though you have a membership. The ONLY two things that place has going for it is that it's convenient if you live in Portland, and the cute chick that works at the counter. Other than that, that place sucks monkey butt. That place is solely responsible for driving me to go deep into the forest and shoot outdoors.

i stopped going to indoor ranges a couple years ago. just not worth it. especialy since the main one i went to started charging like yours. and $5 for the targets, and you had to use theirs.

I am a member of an indoor range in Florida, and the same situation applies.

And that... is why I like our private range.... Not as pretty... but all the benefits of home.... At a fraction of the cost.:p

Dude, I can remember spending less money than that to shoot Glaser Safety Slugs back in the day, LOL....

Many moons ago, I decided I wanted to become more involved in big game sport fishing. I traded in my boat for a bigger, better, battle wagon. I outfitted it with top of the line fishing gear. I kept that boat for four years. When I ran the math, factoring in the monthly payments, insurance, dock rental, fuel, bait, food, beer, maintenance, it cost me approximately (within a few dollars) $16,000 for every pound of fish I caught.

Yup, still scratching my head wondering what the hell was I thinking but then I smile and think of all the fun I had and how much fun all my buddies had with me on that boat, not to mention all the romantic getaway weekends my wife and I enjoyed on that boat. It was worth it. If I couldn't have afforded it, that would have not been right.

Same applies to the expensive 20 rounds. Someone not understanding may say "what the hell were you thinking?" If it was worth it, then the money was well spent, and you had the piece of mind that you could carry your new gun without concern. And I believe, if you couldn't have afforded it, you wouldn't have spent that money. Don't try to justify it, just be happy that you are able to afford a little luxury to make yourself happy.

For non members.

Here in Vegas my range fee's went from $8 a day to $10, 9am-9pm all day, leave and come back anytime all day. Go have lunch, come back shooting again. Bring your own ammo (any except steel Russian), targets, and what ever.

You can shoot up to 44mag's in the handgun range, or if bigger, go to the rifle range.

Members get free range time anytime, 10% discount on any product for sale and get free rental's.

Funny, that's so un-Vegas.

But to the OP. About $2 for some Hornady 460s, and it was worth it.

Not including the range fee's you paid $1.25?

At the local indoor range, you pay $10 to get in, they loan eye and ear protection to anyone who doesn't have their own, you can shoot whatever ammo you bring with you, and they have targets for as little as $0.25.

I didn't know how good I had it.

That's exactly why I don't belong to a dang ol club! They rape you....

If that happened to me I would have had to pay $500 bucks... as when I go shooting it's never with less than 300 rounds, and I bring at least 5 different calibers and gun's with me...

When I lived in CA, I used to and still do when I am in CA shoot at the Folsom Shooting Range/Sacramento Gun Club. It cost $125.00 a year to shoot all disciplines,Handgun, rifle(out to 1000yds) and shotgun. They offer just about any shooting event you could ask for.Targets are .25 for SR-1's.They do collect a $7.00 steel fee for silhouette.Certain ranges are for members only with qualifying targets @ 100-200yds.Members get 10% discount on reloading equipment and supplies. The range sits on just over 800 acres, not a small range by any estimation. It is a jewel of a range for CA,you folks who live in the area should join and support them. They are located Meiss Rd. @ Michigan Bar Rd.Sac Co.CA.

+1

You know why you did that, and you had good reasons.

You're going to carry a gun. You want to know that it will perform, and how it feels when you fire it, and simply be able to know that you've rung it out a little.

Your time is limited, but you were able to accomplish your goals and run your preferred carry ammunition through the new gun.

Yeah, it cost you a bit - but relative to the cost of the gun, the CCW, and of course the value of knowing that you're carrying a platform and ammunition that will protect you should you need it - you did okay. It was a thing that needed to happen, so let the rest of it go.

(When someone asks you "how much is peace of mind worth?", you can now answer "$5 per round..."! ;) )

That sucks, OP.

I would have just left, and gone to another range.

There are 2 indoor ranges near me, and their both a few blocks away from each other. One is very lenient, has nice employees, and let you shoot whatever you want ($15 per port, all day) while the other one is very strict - employees are ok, you can only shoot rifles and shotguns if your a member, you cant bring your own ammo, etc.

BS.

I will always support the 'lenient' one:)

All of these tales of woe make me happy that I belong to a range that lets me shoot for free for a renewable annual membership, which allows me to shoot my own ammo, and which places no limit on the caliber of gun that one can fire!

WOW! That is an absolute "rip off" if you ask me. Our local rod and gun club charges $97 per year. Members pay $2.00 range fee and $0.25 for their targets. There are no rental guns, no range ammo for sale. You can shoot anything indoors except magnum ammunition. Anyone can can sort through the "brass bucket" if they wish if they reload ammunition. Non members can use the range twice accompanied with a paid member and pay only $2.00. Non-members pay $10 per range session. The closest other range charges quite alot for non-member range sessions and their membership fee is off the chart. They will let you shoot their "tommy gun" for about $50.

man.
the range i shoot at has a $10 life time membership fee
and admission is $10 a DAY. and that allows me to shoot pistols, rifles and shotguns.

and of course i can shoot my own ammo out of my own guns.

God bless texas
