The Most Effective Combat Revolver?

Hard Ball;

Nice choice. Great minds really do think alike! ;)

Wonderful thread; "thank you" to all posters. For me, the S&W 627 Special Edition is the handgun for all seasons (I like it so much I own two of them). Ruger's GP100 (KGP-141) is my fine second choice. My preference toward .357 magnum is not a slight to .45 ACP revolvers, nor toward the large bore magnums. However, I am reasonably convinced that many .357 mag loads are about as potent as required in any situation.

Mike said it best. X&X Model 19.

it holds 7 rounds of .357mag. the heavy L-frame and full length underlug help control recoil. also it has a very nice trigger and of course is completely reliable. i think the 4" version is best for self defense.

Agreed, this would be my choice too! ;)

For home defense, performance center 627 8 shot built to use moonclips.

for allaround combat revolver my choice would be the model 19

Ok, Ok, here's one for you. My pick for the best CCW revolver would be the Colt Detective Special, usually with the FBI +P load.

It seems to have the perfect combination of size, capacity, and accuracy to fill the bill, at least for me.

It tends to be the one I pick for everyday duty, sometimes in pairs for a New York reload. Now that's a fast reload.

Artec,

Actually, I'd go with a 2.5" Model 19 in that situation.

Virtually the same size and weight, but you get the full-length ejector rod stroke when using .38 Spl. ammo PLUS the ability to use .357 Mag. ammo.

Go to the Model 13 S&W and you get fixed sights AND the full-length ejector rod with .357 Mag. ammo.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

The 19/66 is a great pistol, but the DS is the one I'm most likely to have with me. I agree that it's not as powerful as a full blown 357 magnum, but I find my shot placement is actually better with the 38, so that's what I use.

I've recently purchased several S&W model 15's because of their fine accuracy, but find I have the same problem with those as I do with the 19's, they are a little too large for me to carry easily. The DS just slips in behind the hip in an IWB and hides.

And since the first rule of gunfighting is to have a gun, I'll stick with my little DS. It has all the speed, power, and accuracy that I need.

Being a fan of the autoloader, my choice of an effective combat revolver has been already been made. Taurus M605 .357MAG. That is what I already own.

Yeah 625 would probably be it, dont own one as I only shoot heavy 45colt single actions as of now when it comes to revolvers but love the feel of the 625. I thougth it was called 645 but that shows how much I know about smiths dont own one and may never.

Or maybe 610?

Sam, Pre expanded, I love that line.

Some very interesting replies which are very well reasoned. I have to agree with the many people who said a .357 Magnum would be an excellent choice. If I was not going to use my 625 45ACP I would go to an N frame S&W .357 Magnum. The 8 shot performance Center version would be my choice.
