the man buying up all the ammo?

DHS ordered a MAXIMUM (non-guaranteed) 450 million rounds OVER A 5 YEAR contract. DHS has 135,000 weapons carrying officers. 450,000,000 divided by 5 years is 90,000,000 per year. 90,000,000 per year divided by 135,000 officers is 665 rounds per officer per year.... yeah... 55 rounds a month for each guy..MAXIMUM..

I've said this in pretty much every "Where's the ammo?" thread I've come across. The DHS has lots of officers, they buy lots of ammo ALL the time. The government buys huge amounts with manufacturing contracts; they don't buy physical product outright. This is no more than a renewal of a contract for them that is simply grabbing more attention because of the current political environment.

People seem to think there are a few hundred FBI agents and ten or twelve ATFE agents. There are quite a few more.

We have somewhere close to a million combat personnel in the military.
I wouldn't be surprised if all the National LEO/DOS/DHS agencies add up to the same. Even department of Education now has armed agents. I don't think there is any way to figure that out though.

They use a lot of ammunition.

I bet they end up buying about 150 rounds per officer per year and that most of that goes to a small number of the armed officers who actually train.

"Tinfoilhattery." I love it!

Wait, does this mean there is a shortage of tin foil? Is the government buying all the tin foil? I'm not going to be caught flat footed again!!! (running sound followed by door slamming).
:p

Conspiracy theories always pop up when there is a shortage. Its just that our new US marketing head for firearms sales that was hired on in 2008 is just so darn good at his job. With his rehire in 2012 and redoubled marketing efforts, the US firearm client base has jumped by leaps and bounds, and manufacturing can't keep up.

I reads that this year the gov has purchased/ordered more than two b(with a B) illion rounds and has them stored all over the place in large unmarked containers.

When those rumors first surfaced someone added a few zeros to the numbers. Probably on pupose to stir up trouble. The truth was reported long ago. The correct number is millions, with an M.

Yes, the Government is buying huge amounts of ammunition. This war we are in and the needs of the Homeland Security types exceed US industrial capacity. The US military has gone to Korean firms because there is not enough ammunition manufacturing capacity in the US to supply the war needs. Then Homeland Security has jumped in with huge ammunition orders.

Incidentally, the Government pays whatever price the ammunition makers want to charge and that is coming out of your pockets.

You the small user is really paying through the nose for what little is out there, and if you don't like it, Uncle Sam will take it.

Its also like any other shortage, hoarding sets in and has to run its course. Ammo shows up on the shelf at Wal-Mart and it is immediately sold to somone with 1000s of rounds already stored at home.

I thought the mainstream news has already acknowledged the government bought 2 billion rounds.

Not all the agents are going to be training putting 2,500 rounds down the tube in a year. The notion is absurd. Only those agents who are likely to encounter dangerous people in their job postion would be training with that much ammo.

In the most active month of the Iraq invasion, according to an article, the US only used 22,000,000 rounds.

DHS just recently purchased 7k rifles that can fire full auto.
