The first day out the door with a CCW

You will find, if you are smart, that you have become very civil and even polite, in daily interactions with others. If you used to have a beer after work downtown, and found yourself or a companion noisy and brash, that will cease. You will avoid voluntarily placing yourself in situations where others may feel the need to intimidate you. You will discover you are very much aware of what is going on around you, not because you want to use it, but because you might have to, and would rather let being in condition yellow help to avoid getting to condition orange and red.

That's exactly how things evolved for me. Do I dare say that I find that I am a better person for making these decisions? I think so.

Ale GOlem: Good luck and I wish you well in your new lifestyle.

Welcome, and Great to hear that you've decided to get your permit and are considering to get your conceals. To answer your question , i was brought up in a gun neutral home, my father liked firearms but wasn't a "gun nut" nor did he ever carry. He simply taught me the dangers of a weapon and that it is not a toy, he made sure i understood proper handling of a firearm.
When i actually got my conceals last year both my parents were against it, despite the fact that my father had his conceals and used firearms in a couple of different jobs. I don't think they have yet grown comfortable with me carrying, especially me carrying everywhere.
My first day of carry was with a Glock 19 and i was to be honest very nervous of getting a serious case of "glock leg" . I wasn't used to the idea of no true manual safety. After a couple of days i grew very comfortable with the firearm, in terms of proper handling and i realized that my gun wasn't anymore dangerous to myself than a lighter if handled correctly. I did have to change my attire a little to conceal properly but nothing major.
I carry as a plan B. What i mean by this is plan A is you being aware of your setting and possible outcomes. For example if i know theres an area know for rowdy people of possible confontations i will avoid it, at night i rarely go to gas stations to avoid again problems, not because im scared but because i am aware that at 2 in the morning most people are either buying alcohol or a dutch so they can smoke a blunt. However even though your precatious it doesnt mean that you can't find yourself in a very bad situation in broad daylight. If you know the bank you go to was going to get robbed tomorrow you wouldn't go, right? Unfortunatly we can't know someone will see us as a target or someone around as a victim. Carry and carry everyday everywhere, just in case you find yourself in the unlikely scenario. I knew someone who passed away in a gas station a few blocks by their house at 11pm because someone wanted to take his wallet, he was shot dead and his wife. Will it happen probably not, but do you know for certain?

Also, I feel your pain about anti gunners... I used to be one. The day I got robbed at gunpoint for the 3rd time is when I changed my mind about firearms. I decided I needed a way to protect myself and my family should the 4th robbery occur. Hence my signature, I will NOT be a victim again!
I think you were a victim again, and again. Your quote should be " Rob me once it wont happen again, rob me twice really? what are the chances?, Rob me thrice! What next struck by lightning!?...Soooo i bought a S&W 500 :D" Im just kidding, sorry to hear you had such luck, and glad to hear you changed your mind. Question though where exactly do you like that you've gotten robbed so much if i can ask?

No, I don't mind. I got robbed twice in Kansas City, Missouri and once in New Orleans. I live in a suburb south of KCMO but go there on occasion for various reasons. I was first robbed in New Orleans shortly after Mardi Gra, some dude stuck a small pistol in my belly and demanded money.

Second one was at the city market in KCMO, I was waiting for some friends so we could go in to a concert. Some guy approached asking if I wanted a ticket and then proceeded to point a gun in my face.

Third time was in a KCMO neighborhood. I was doing a deal with someone on craigslist and he robbed me instead.

I carry because I refuse to be a victim. There are too many incidents, such as mass killers or armed robbers who don't plan to leave witnesses, that it would be wise to be armed.

a few years ago, some wacko walked into a Roman Catholic church in my neighborhood, on a weekday, shot and killed the priest and one aged parishener during a sparsely attended daily mass. I'm also just a few miles from the site of the Long Island Railroad Massacre. I live in a good neighborhood but trouble can find you no matter where you live.

I realized when I stepped off the C-17 on the tarmac at HAAF and coming back from the sandbox that I couldn't go the rest of my life feeling that vunerable.

I'm a pretty laid back guy, I don't get worked over much of anything except Braves baseball, but the thought of cowering under a chair and waiting for an active shooter scares the everloving crap out of me.

And the thought of being privy to a situation in which my loved ones or I would be subject to violence and incapable of resisting effectivly makes me skin crawl.

I am definintly of the breed where I feel naked without my EDC piece. Do I think I'm Rambo? No. Am I competent with my weapon? Yes. Do I ever want to shoot another living thing again? No. Will to protect myself, family, or home? Yes.

Oh, and for the record I think my first trip whilst CCWing was actually to my local gun shop, but I did stop by Wally World on the way home, for and I kid you not, beer, steaks, and a Red Box DVD rental. It was date night. :D

I've been a Cop for a long time. I've always carried or so it seems.
I think that every Citizen has the responsibility to take care of their self and their family. As I also believe that every Citizen was the duty to defend their neighbor and their county. I believe that a Citizen has the Right and Duty to Carry. A slave has no duty to do any of the above.

I felt much more natural and relaxed my first time using my CHP than I did my first time using my driver's license.

The why (or why not, sometimes) I don't have much more of an answer for than "only legal purposes."

Ale

Well, I grew up with a pro gun family. Carried a gun basically since I was 18. I have been carrying concealed for the last 3.5 years. I shoot more often than anyone I currently know, and it all just comes natural. When I leave the house with my wife she has her gun and I have mine. . . just sorta how we do things.

I have had my Texas CHL for about three years and in that time I have carried perhaps 15 times. However, I keep a handgun in my car.

When I first got the license, I carried several times. I mean, why not? I did do the Wally World Walk. I went to a gun show, I went out running errands with it. I took my daughter to the movies. Then had to walk back to the car when I noticed that the the theater posted the Texas 30.06 sign.

I got the license in the winter, which was a good time to carry a CZ 75 PCR. The first day, the first few hours, I was accutely aware that I had a gun on my belt. After that, I kind of forgot about it.

One important thing - it doesn't make me feel more macho or brave. Probably the opposite. I am so concious of carrying that I go out of my way to avoid trouble. Someone cuts me off on the road? No big deal. I accidently cut someone off and they flip me the bird? I smile and shrug or wave - accepting fault. There's a saying that 'an armed society is a polite society' and it's true. Go to the Fort Worth Gun Show and accidently bump into someone while watching the tables: "I'm sorry!" "No, entirely my fault, foregive me!"

If I were ever in a position to have to use a gun to defend myself or my loved ones I am very confident that I could do it. I think I have enough sense to know when I might be in a situation when I should be carrying and, frankly, that's a good time to rethink putting myself in that situation.

"I think I have enough sense to know when I might be in a situation when I should be carrying"

I sure don't.
I think about scenarios like yesterdays S. California beauty-salon shooting...
8 killed just casually sitting in the "wrong place at the wrong time"...
I wouldn't have had the sense to know to be carrying in a beauty salon. That's kinda why I always carry.

To each, his own...

Why carry? I generally carry a pen and mechanical pencil in my pocket because I may need to use one of them. Same reason I carry a pistol.
First day feelings: Uncomfortable – but that goes away with time and now I’m uncomfortable if I’m not carrying. I will note that there was no steak purchased on my Wal-Mart Walk, but hey, the wife had let me buy two pistols so it was OK (to broke to afford the traditional steak).
Normal carry is Kahr P9 in pocket or nylon clip-on, but sometimes a higher capacity XDm is toted in Crossbreed.

The Concealed Carry class in my state was very simple and basic. My personal opinion is a permit holder should get additional training, become skilled in the use of their weapon(s) and maintain a level of proficiency. Way back in the mid 70’s, I shot in target pistol comps so I thought I had a good grip on the basics (can actually still punch holes in paper at a set distance, with no time pressure and a dialed in pistol). Found a whole different world when I started shooting IDPA – drawing from concealment, shooting on the move, use of cover, moving targets, reloading under pressure, multiple target transitions, etc. Point being: I carry a pistol because someday I may need it and I try to maintain proficiency because if I need to use a pistol it will be too late to start practicing.

Just got my conceal carry today wearing my revolver around the house to get used to wearing it. Can't afford to do Wally world walk ( or buy anything if I did the walk) Revolver is pretty much comfortable ( Taurus 617 7shot 357 snub in IWB-appendix carry). Will require more work with my S&W Sigma but I am sure I can pull it off.

I carry because a cop is too heavy...
Hear it before but I like it just the same. Also refreshing to see post from LEO saying they are glad we civilians are getting our conceal carries so we can protect ourselves.
