The definitive .40?

I LOVE my Ruger P94 .40! great gun for the money...never fails to feed any ammo I put through it...accurate as heck...wrap around hogue grips and it looks...pretty? I think I need to see my therapist about this one:eek:

Sundance,

This advice is worth exactly what you are paying for it, but I would suggest you don't buy a 40 Auto.

As to the definitive 40, I think the Glock 23 is the best compromize of concealibility, capacity, and controlability. YMMV!

When I think of the cartridge, I think of the HK USP and Glock M-22. Probably because of the add campaigns by ammunition manufacturers featuring these pistols. The Sig P229 also comes to mind but less so than the previous two. When I think .357 Sig I think Sig P229.

I've owned several pistols chambered in 40 S&W to include: the Sig P229, Glock M22 and Steyr M-40. My favorite of those was the Steyr followed closely by the Sig. The most accurate .40 S&W pistol in my hands has been the Browning P-35 owned by a friend of mine, but P-35=9mm.

At the moment I agree with Sundances preferences for the .45ACP and 9mm. One of these days I'll probably have to give the .40 another try.

Dave T,

I have owned three .40s, Sig 229, Glock 23, and Glock 27. Liked none...Sold all...So I think I have a basis for my opinion. Thanks for the advise though, as I most surely will NEVER buy another one.

This shoulda been a poll, I'd love to have seen the results.

I have to agree, the HK USP40f. As mentioned, it was designed for the .40 and scaled down for the 9mm. The EXCELLENT recoil system that comes standard was designed to tame the .40, and what an excellent job it does.

I do agree though, that the Sig 229 and Glock 23 are excellent too.

Thanks for the replies.

A number of people have mentioned the Glock 23. I really like this pistol and agree that this might be the perfect handgun for a lot of uses and scenarios. For my money, it may just be the perfect compromise of size, firepower, weight, etc.

But I can't help but think that it is in some ways overshadowed by Glock's other offerings, at least as far as how history will record things. When I think of Glock's contribution what comes to mind is not only that they brought plastic pistols into the mainstream but that they did it with what is probably the king of the wondernines (remember that label?) in the Glock 17.

I realize the way "history will record it" may have little to do with practicality and real life use, but I think it's something fun to consider besides the "if you could only have one SHTF gun" question.

Thanks again.
