The definitive .40?

While I have and appreciate my Glock 21, I think that the definitive .45 platform is the 1911. I feel that there was a hole in my collection until I had a 1911 filling in the .45 ACP niche.

But what, in your opinion, is the definitive .40 *&* platform?

I thought maybe the HK USP, since I'd read that it was designed from ground up around the cartridge and not upgraded from a 9mm design. But I really prefer the USP 9mm to the .40. Maybe this is just a case of preferring 9mm in general, though.

But what would your choice be if you had to have one pistol to fill the .40 category in your collection?

My initial thoughts would have run towards a Sig P226 or a Glock 23, which are both excellent arms. Until today. I was reading my new Kimber catalogue and discovered they make a 1911 in .40! I think I must have one of these.

G22/G23 beat the *&* 4006 to market by picoseconds.

Those would be the original .40's.

If I were looking to amass a varied collection of definitive/representative samples and already had a Glock and a 1911 in my collection, the SIG P-229 would be a swell choice.

I did not like the 40 until shooting a cz40B, it
has changed my mind, somewhat like a 1911 it fits
my hand, points natural, (for me) and accuracy is
just great. Cost $329.00.

The Glock 23 or the HK compact will probably garner the most votes.

I want a Browning HP in 40. For me, that's the one.

The USP and SIG 229 were both designed around .40, so it would be one of those. Because of my HK bias, I say the USP .40.:p

P229

Also designed for .40 S&W. Not released until it was right. Out of the box they will out shot many high dollar custom guns.
Of course the first .40 S&W is always dear to my heart. S&W 4006

Even if I did have to send it to Cylinder and Slide to get to shoot right.

Let's see....the ultimate platform for the .40 S&W is.....THE LANDFILL. As we look back thorugh firearms history, we find countless excellent cartridges. And we often find other cartridges which are improvements on the original. For example....38 Special improved to .357 Magnum, .44 Special improved to .44 Magnum, .45 Colt improved to .454 Casull. Yet with the great 10mm, thanks to the FBI's unwise decision to choose it as a service weapon for less than fullgrown individals, we had to down size it to the .40 S&W. Sounds like a backstep to me. I realize that the Glock 22 .40 is the most poplular single gun in law enforcement today. I realize that the popularity of the .40 is growing by leaps and bounds every day. I realize that I am in the minority and I will probably hurt somebody's feelings with this post. Well get over it...this is the place for opinions. I say, if I want a semi-auto and need a big one, give me a .45 and if I need a small one, give me a 9mm. There you have two different century old cartridges that have proven themselves in battle and are good enough for me.
