The Death Penalty, Schwarzenegger and Court TV movie

On January 19th of this year Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger allowed the
first death sentence to be served in three years, and the first under
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. That is almost copied straight from a
news site (because honestly if I hadn’t, there’s no way I’d have been
able to spell Arnie’s name!)

Anyway, I recently caught an ad for a movie on Court TV called The
Exonerated. It’s based on true stories of several people who spent
years on death row for crimes they didn’t commit. The original version
was a play which inspired my interest in the subject of the death
penalty. I specifically remember one guy who spent something like 20
years on death row before finally being cleared.

Now before someone jumps all over me: I’m not saying that the guy who
was just executed in California was innocent. But does anyone think
it’s acceptable that even one innocent person could be executed? I
think it’s about time this country joins the rest of the civilized
world and adopts a more humane approach. For those of you still on the
fence on this issue, I’d check out this movie, because if it’s anything
like the play the personal stories will astound you. I think it airs on
January 27 (but check courttv.com just in case I’m wrong). And if you
have thoughts on this issue, I’d like to hear them.

A more humane approach to what, the death penalty? Or to convicted criminals on death row? Convicted criminals serving time?

I've always been in favor of the death penalty. As for it being acceptable that an innocent person be executed, it is unfortunate.

I saw the program you mentioned, it does look really interesting. While I think its sad that innocent people are executed, I think that the truly guilty should get sent quickly to the chamber or guillotine or whatever we're using these days. Supporting guilty criminals while they sit in prison on death row for years, eating three good meals a day, working out, playing cards, watching tv, not working like honest citizens and WASTING good money, while they continualy submit appeals to clutter the system in hopes of getting out in time - now I think that is ridiculous.

Everyone in my prison is innocent. I know because they tell me several times a day. ;) I swear, if I hear, "Wullah ma adry, ana baree", (I swear to God I don't know, I'm innocent) ever again after I leave this country...

As for the death penalty, I concur with 4thHorseman.

P.S. I smell a troll. First post ever, and without a shred of relevance to RKBA.... hmmm....

Death penalty

This is a difficult question. I think that there are cases where the death penalty is warranted- and that is in the case of the most extreme cases involving perverted acts on kids, people who kill cops etc.

I am concerned when juries determine the death penalty because they are very easily swayed by emotion.

If all the evidence is there and a matter is serious enough- I think it is warranted.

Kind of hard to exonerate someone after this particular punishment has been imposed.

The death penalty is a promise that society will randomly kill the occasional innocent person (we KNOW we've executed innocent people). The upside is supposed to be a decrease in cost, and scaring criminals. Since we also know that criminals don't seem to care (since they don't believe they'll be caught in the first place), it really just comes down to cost.

If randomly executing any 2 Americans per year would lower the federal budget, would that be worthwhile? What is the essential difference?

The only other argument is vengence. Again, if you know some of your executed were innocent, is that a good trade for exacting retribution on the others?

Our court system is a far too primitive tool for devining truth for it to issue permanent sentences like death. An uncontested admission is one thing, circumstantial evidence and the problematic eye witness is another.

Man, what is with this Forum. I've never been on a forum that has had so many trolls pushing their agenda's across with out any real connection to the website.

While i am for the death penalty

especially in the most heinous cases...This is the only legitimate argument against it that I've ever seen. And, unfortunately, what I see of our justice system lately, doesn't instill a lot of confidence, that justice is always done.
So, it is a dilemma. But I still think that there are some "clear cut" cases, where there is no question of guilt, and it should be applied...

That pos was not innocent. He pleaded guilty. What the hell about the little girls that pos killed? Who the hell is going to exonerate them?

No one was talking about the guy who was just executed. The original questions and follow-up were general in nature.

I believe he's only Austrian.

With enough support, an amendment could be passed. And maybe it should be considered if he proves to be an effective and thoughtful politician.

It bothers me that we can't produce men of stature within our own borders in sufficient amounts that we end up considering naturalized citizens for important offices. It speaks poorly of our educational and political systems.

How true Handy, and sad. Its just ironic that not too long ago, we left a
country, and started our own government, so as never to be under foreign
power, and not too many years later are electing foreigners to public office.
It is a disturbing trend........

I can't believe that this is still coming up...Ahnuld for Prez, puleaze. Just last week, another story surfaced about a woman that he allegedly groped and threatened in 2000. You guys need to take the copy of 'Terminator' back to Blockbuster and put the bong away for awhile.
Seriously...get a clue.

Yes his behavior is deplorable!

Newt for president! :D

People I'd actually enjoy voting for: McCain, Powell...

Jeez, no one else comes to mind.
