Nobody won the Cold War.
Here in the US, the Cold War allowed our Gov't to grow beyond the control of the People, into a monster that is only interested in self-perpetuation.
In my opinion, elected service ought to be voluntary, or at the most, only paying enough to provide for food, housing and transportation. Then, we might actually get candidates that are truly interested in serving the populace.
In the former-Soviet Union, much the same happened. However, in that area, the gov't grew beyond its own control, and the economies went to $h!t.
The citizens of the East are suffering greatly now, partly due to the economic problems, partly due to the leadership problems.
Globally, nuclear weapons were multiplied to the point that the Earth could be destroyed many times over. Now, with the USSR dissolved, said nukes are under very little control or security, and I fear that they are finding their way into the hands of small groups that may use them against the US, and other populations.
Yes, the Cold War did provide many jobs, and much revenue for many defense-related industries, and during the Cold War both govt's enjoyed varying degrees of economic success,
but in the long run the citizens of both "sides" have been hurt badly.
The whole thing sucked, nobody won.
We all lost.
