I agree that there's no BEST handgun, only what's best for you.
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool revolver man. I've had .22s, .38s, .357s, and .44 mags. I think the nicest multi-purpose revolver is probably the S&W Model 19 .357, 4". The 66, is the Stainless version.
The L-Frame .357s are also good and I have a 627 stainless .357 that's a joy to shoot on the range, but heavy to carry.
The flexibility of the .357 mag is fantastic. Recently, I cast some wadcutters and loaded mild Bullseye powder target rounds. I also have some pretty hot loads behind 125 grain HPs.
The best thing about revolvers is that the don't spew my valuable brass all over the ground.
