I guess I prefer big bores...though I have a 357 & 9mm (even have a 32). But I also have a 44 (and will have a 45 again before to long). I think 2 guns are the way to go. I think a 44 or 45 set for cross draw (so you can go to grip when you hit orange with no one the wiser) with a short barreled 9mm or 357 on strong side (for "shove & shoot" or CQB) makes a lot of sense.

The bigger bored and more ergonomical gun would be the choice when you had time or distance. The short barreled gun is for speed of draw and ease of retention.

I would rahter have 16 357 sig rounds going 1450 with a 125 grain bullet. My 31 does not recoil much more than my Beretta 92 and it will penitrate barriers better an leave a bigger hole in the badguy with at least a 5% gain in stopping power according to Evan's stats. Also the 9mm has a problem it is hard to get good ammo that will stop well and penitrate hard targets as well. All of those 91% loads are 115+P+_ rounds that don't do well against windshield doors ext and this may not be important for home defense it is important in my line of work.

Pat,

Did you register that tri burst mouse ;)

Really either one is a fine round, but they both depend on velocity and expansion for their effectivness. I tend to perfer big holes from the start.

Looks like I have no room to talk.

Just got back from some testing.
.44spec cowboy loads, 3" bbl, rapid fire, all go center of mass on moving target. .44 spec cowboy loads a bit disappointing on bowlin pins. My 2.5" 686 with semi stout factory 180 gr jhp went THROUGH fattest part of bowling pin, expands to well over half inch and the pin hits the ground bout six feet past the far edge of the table. Nice combination, ton of energy expended in the target AND adequate penetration. For comparison my mod 36 gets the pins off the table but have to head shoot em.

As far as time to get big guns on target, I watched Sig P220 shooter get two moving bad guys with seven rounds each in bout three seconds, from conceiled including the reload. All fourteen rounds were in center sternum areas of the two BGs. The Sig shooter was pushing the cyclic rate limit of the gun. He is a bit faster with big wheel guns.

I carry 125gr at 1200 in my deep cover mod 36, kinda sad when the 1902 vintage .38spec does the same as the 1902 vintage 9X19 stretched to the max. My 36 weighes just under 25 ounces loaded and jumps out of the leather.

I like the 9s but want nothing less than 9X29, favorite is the 9X32.

Sam.......runnin for cover.

Seems if we're talkin' HOME defence (wether it be from bad guys OR gators), you'd have access to any of your guns. In any case, I'm not going for any of my pistols, I got an 8-round 12Ga (with buckshot and slugs)espicially for that purpose. Should drop either one without a problem. (besides, most bad guys are scared stiff of the ole shotgun, the gator's just too stupid to know better!)

The Glockmouse strikes again. Remember, if you don't want to SEND, keep your finger off the left-clicker... it's THAT easy ;)

Don't you know the 4 safety rules for posting?

Both are nice for defence aginst bi-peds with modern ammo AND shot placement, but if push came to shove and I could only have one the the .357 would win just because of ammo options. The basic FMJ and JHP are about the same in number of options, but on the .357 there is True WadCuttters, Flares, shotshells .38spec loads. If I had to pick 1 calibur in Revolver .357 would be probabably the best and 1 in Self-Loading .45acp (or SUPER).
