The .44 Special.......

Waaaay back in my younger days I read a lot about the .44 Special. I didn't have one, but did have a Colt New Service in .45 Colt that was in pretty sad shape. So, a new barrel and cylinder and I had a .44 Special. Enjoyed this gun for a number of years until it was stolen from my gunsmith's shop. Next .44 Special was a little Charter Bulldog, ca. 1975. Swapped that off for a .44 Magnum and been without a .44 Special for some time.

A few years ago I stumbled upon a Ruger three-screw .357 Magnum Blackhawk, and sent this off to Dave Clements to convert to .44 Special. For the last two years this has been my daily carry gun. Recently bought a Uberti Model P in .44 Special. These guns sort of comprise the bulk of my shooting nowadays, age and Social Security limiting my shooting. Don't shoot so much .44 Magnum now, nor fire-breathin' .45 Colt. These .44 Specials just seem more laid back for a senior citizen, or, as our church call us, Senior Saints.

Here are my .44 Apecials:

Mr. Wright that is an outstanding looking pair of revolvers you have. I also have a Uberti in .44 spl. and they are a great shooting revolver indeed.

Nice!

Nothing wrong with the .44 Special! I really enjoy the caliber as well. I now have four. My Bulldog for CC, Ruger Sheriff New Vaquero for CC, 5 1/2" Bisley flattop and 5 1/2" plow handle flattop. It's a caliber hard not to like as it really will do almost all you need a revolver for.... And accurate. Like my .45 Colt revolvers more due to the historical nature of the round and makes a bigger hole, but nothing I can find fault with the o' 44 Special!!!

Here is one of mine :

I'm completely with you Mr. Wright. My alltime favorite centerfire calibre. I presently own a 3rd generation colt SAA that I treasure.

I don't own a .44 Special, but the bulk of my .44 shooting is done with Specials in my Ruger SBH. A couple of years ago, I settled on Skeeter's Load for my one-and-only .44 Special load and I've yet to disappointed with it. That load does 99% of everything I want a handgun load to do.

I only own one 44 Special, a CA Bulldog. I have way too much brass for it now and I happen to notice that 44 special loads shoot extremely well out of my RH. A real pleasure to shoot out of that big gun too.

Don't know about the weight on that one. But I greatly regret not buying the 696 that a friend of mine had for sale.

This is my favorite 44 Special, a M624. Skeeter Skelton got S&W to bring these out in 1986. The owner of the gunshop that sold these was very unhappy as 44 Mag's flew out the door, but the 44 Specials he stocked up were slow movers. So I got mine for $250.00 out the door. His loss, my gain!

Fast forward 25 years and people are finding the 44 Special is an excellent round, you get a big bullet at moderate velocities and it will hit with a bang.

a 44spl thread?

Well lets see a Bulldog, two 44mags that see mostly spl ammo, and a 44-40 Remington Outlaw that now has a new 44spl cylinder made for it, at last count about 700 pieces of brass a 200gr bullet mold for it,I kinda have a thing for the 44 spl.It don't take alot of proddin' to get me started on this cartridge.

I traded a 6 1/2", nickeled, 29-2 for this one a few days ago. I figured 29-2's turn up every other day and twice on Sunday, but 4", 24-3's with the box and papers don't.

I used to have one of the "Thunder Ranch" 44 Specials, but traded it off for something else. This one is going to stay.

I really like the 44 special cartridge as well... the 396 was my everyday gun for several years... I've kinda gravitated towards the 45 Colt since I started shooting CAS...

I should find myself a nice steel 44, to compliment my carry piece

the 45 Colt that replaces it for daily use most of the time these days...
