The 38 sp is specal to me

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the circle of life of reloading and shooting 158gr. LSWC .38s is pure zen.

I load and shoot other cartridges, but the .38 Special is THE handgun cartridge for me.

My latest purchase came with a special serial number for the lovers of 38/357 and I'm thrilled with it. Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk convertible .357/9mm limited edition from Lipsey's

.38 is my most used and favorite cartridge. Load and shoot a whole bunch of em, mostly .38, but I do treat myself to a few .357s. Almost all are cast, 158gr. Round nose, semiwadcutters etc.

I like the way 38 Special shoots and value its subsonic quality for the probability of not having hearing protection if ever used in self defense. That is a real problem with 9mm.

I like a gun with some oomph to it, so my target loads are pretty stout, probably +p range. 140 gr coated from MO is what I shoot lately plus 158 FMJ for my older S&W 36-1 with tight throats and leading issues.

This one has been throwing lead down range since around 1915. It doesn't look like much, but it still locks up nice and tight.

38 special is my favorite as well.
I have several but love a model 64 (no dash) 2" barrel made in the 70's.

For Christmas I get to add another 38 and cannot decide.
feel free to send me ideas.

ChiefTJS: That's really neat. I'm a numbers guy, so I like that.

A bit like my S&W model 686 that I took ownership of on 6/6/86. I bought it new; and at the time, California had a 15-day waiting period (it's 10 now). Trust me, I didn't do the math or plan it out that way. It also may well be my favorite gun of my collection (4" bbl).

Glad to see all the love for the old 38 sp. I recently picked up an old Colt Army Special made in 1912. At over a hundred years old it it will put 5 rounds in to 3" at 25 yds and locks up tight. The best caliber or handgun is what is best for you, for me at this time in my life it is a 38 sp and possibly a 22lr. :D

Bill Jordan said the 38 Special was the most powerful round the average man-most of us-could hope to master, and Charlie Askins used one for most of his Border Patrol days. I have a 1970s Charter Arms Bulldog but it is a somewhat more specialized limited purpose revolver, while the only S&W better than a K-frame 38 Special is one in .357. The Model 15 was one of my "grail" guns though when I finally got around to getting one I bought a 1953 Combat Masterpiece. And like so many of us a 38 Special WC was the first round I reloaded.
