TFL browsing at workplace

I am glad I am a System Admin. If you don't know what a proxy server is good luck at geeting at the logs. They should be very secure. A good way to check if you are behind a proxy server is to go to www.grc.com and check out shields up. Then click on test my shields. This will give you the IP of where it thinks you are. Run from the dos prompt winipcfg and see if they match. If so then you are probably not using a proxy server. If they don't match, you are using a proxy server, or a router that is masking your IP. In either of these cases your network traffic is being logged. Also be aware that if you are using your companies email address they can read anything you send or receive. I suggest getting PGP and encrypting it.

Not that it's a bad idea to clean out the cobwebs every now and again, but, doing so won't likely have the desired affect of making your surfing habits invisible to your employer (or anyone else interesting in finding out where you surf). And, even if you do clean out all your cookies and cache files, odds are I can still get what I need from your computer.

I'm an information security consultant, and I deal with these issues on a regular basis. I've been involved in several forensic investigations, at least one of which involved an individual that did all the things that have been suggested, and it didn't keep us from retrieving the relevant details (only slowed us down a little, and not much at that).

There are so many different ways to skin that cat that, regardless of what you do, if "they" want to know, they'll find out -- whether you're deleting cookies, not using a proxy server, or using an "anonymous" proxy.

Bottom line: if you're concerned about somebody at working finding out about your surfing habits, then don't do it.

Oh, and, BTW -- I am at work, I'm one of the admins, and I don't care. :)

My primary concern when I posted is in pointing out that a number of people in various threads comment that they carry concealed when their workplace prohibits them from doing so. I'd thought wiping out the cookies, history whatnot would hide one from the casual observer (if terminals are shared) and if anything else was a problem then a redirection service like www.anonymizer.com would do the trick.

I'm not an IT expert - I'm a grad student - I just read up on the computer rags and do what I can :)

I guess the best thing for people to do is figure out if their workplace is watching them (as in seriously watching them, waiting for them to flub as to nail them) and then refrain from making any reference to CCW from a computer at work. Then again in a job like that it's probably a bygone anyways.

Thank you for the information though. Always good to know.

Admirable... and, like I said, not a bad idea... but if you're truly concerned about that issue, then you're better off not posting about your CCW habits at all (either on TFL or elsewhere). After all... you never know who might be reading your posts, eh?

I mean... half the guys I work with (including one of the company owners) are shooting enthusiasts, and it's not outside the realm of possibilities that they lurk 'round here...

Thank you ... well I did try ... it's not like I'm trying to be the McGruff of TFL or anything, it was a random thought like "Gee, these people are complaining their workplace doesn't recognize RKBA ... and they say they carry CCW ... but they say it's illegal ... and on a Monday at 2pm aren't these people at work ... !?"

I'm NOT an IT expert, I just read up on what I can ... the real experts here on this thread, thank you I've learned a lot from you.

I just hope I end up with a company that's open as yours, sedwards :)
