Testing the New Software...Again

I like it.

Kind-Hearted Solicited Suggestions:

It's a bit clutterd, me thinks, on the actual thread page. I'd like the editorial-to-pixel content a bit higher on the content side (less ancillary info, more just people's words)

- Maybe try losing the icons for the 'profile, web, etc' buttons on each post and just have the text? The line of icons under each post is drawing my eyes more than the content. Too distracting, it breaks up the way the thread flows visually between posts.

- is it just me or is there less space between the lines of text vertically? The paragraphs look squished together and I think it's a bit harder to read that way.

And a couple minor opinions:

- maybe up the font size a point on the topic title (under the path 'firing line > handguns' line) to make it stand out from the path line above it? Or drop a point on the path line.

- and I'm not sure the 'registered date' & '# of posts' each member has is necessary in the header column on the left, but others may dig it - what do you all think?.

I like it! No rest for the weary, eh Rich?

Thanks, guys.
GRD-
Loosing some of the icons and streamlining the look is already on my top do list. The settings for various fonts are not as specific as UBB. Thus, changing one changes a number, but this I can work on once we're committed.

A number of talented people are working on the speed issue. There's no doubt that MySQL can (and will) be faster than UBB.

i monkeyied around in the warez last night

a couple of issues

1) the post new topic needs to be isolated from the reply to thread button,
it is to easy to hit new thread when you want to reply

2) there does not seem to be a picture post amount limit, you can fill pages with smiles

3) un broken text strings cause 3 foot long windows

4) editing posts does not display a "this post edited" string

5) we need some cool new buttons

like this:
post.gif

6) is it possible to convert image screen draws to links if the file size is over (X) K in size?

1) We will make it so.
2) There isn't a limit at present. Any suggestions for the setting? 10?
3) This can be limited. However, our experience is that this only happens when someone posts a long URL. If we set the system to insert a space, the URL comes out invalid. In eaither case it requires Staff intervention. On the positive side, you'll note that a three foot long string in vB messes up just that one post. In UBB, it messes up the entire thread.
4) If you edit before a set time limit (20 minutes at present) no idiot flag comes up. Neat, huh?
5) New buttons....were interested, and you obviously have the talent for it. Design 'em with a bit of complimenting color and we'll take a look. Just don't make 'em too large or too overpowering.
6) Unfortunately, no.
Thanks for the input
Rich

The new forum seems to be working well for me.

Request: Can you make it so that I don't have to hit the GO forms button after I make a selection from any of the drop down menus? Make it so that my selection is just automatically acted upon?

I'll look into it. The hack probably isn't too tough. The problem is keeping track of lots of little hacks....every time they come out with a new release (one's due in about 2 weeks) you have to reinstall and debug each of the hacks.

The software is rapidly approaching birth. For those of you still playing with it, it now resides in it's (almost) final resting place at http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/index.php

Rich, I like it, I would think that the speed would improve after removing the UBB application. The preview feature is a great idea as is the 20 minute time limit to edit w/o the "Ooops line".

With ubb, as of late, I have been having problems with the various boards self renewing when someone posts. This software does not seem to have that problem. Then again it could be my hard drive is going south.

Thanks, Rich and staff for working on this.
