Testing the New Software...Again

The new TFL software is available for Member testing. It runs on MySQL and should be faster and far more efficient, if we make the switch. That's a big "if" since, we are not comitted to it as yet. The software is new and there were a number of bugs that we needed to work out. Depending on what we hear from the Members, we may or may not go with it. Here's some notes:

<UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI>Expect the new Board to be slow, during the testing phase only. MySQL requires some tweaking and this is very difficult while UBB is sucking up all the system memory. We'd like to get as many TFL'rs as possible posting to the new software. This will allow us to really get a handle on where we can pinch and pull.

<LI> Your memberships from TFL have been ported over. You simply need to go to "profile" to set your cookies and have the system recognize you.

<LI> Feel free to test the new software at your convenience. Temporarily it will allow you to register under multiple handles in order to test the registration feature. Feel free to post gibberish, edit your posts, change your profile and create general, non-offensive mayhem. We want you to try and "break" it.

<LI>All TFL posts as of today have been imported into the new database, with the exception of the Suggestions Forum. This is not a dynamic process....in other words, posts made there after the import of a few hours ago are not reflected here and vice versa. All test period posts made there will disappear if we do the switchover.

<LI>Provide your comments, feedback and bug reports in the Suggestions Forum on the new software....you'll see it's empty as of now. Please try to be as specific as possible, providing links to example threads. Also, we did not author the software...so please try to keep the wish list posts to a minimum. We know this is a judgement call and is dependant on your knowledge of what's involved in a change. Just use your best judgement and we'll try to respond to all requests.

Have at it. The test forums are located at http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/index.php

Well, here's what I get:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Warning: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES) in
/usr/local/apache/htdocs/tfltestarea/admin/db_mysql.php on line 31

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Please try again by pressing

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the
problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience.[/quote]

You need to set the READ LINKS to a different color, like on the original board. Outside of that (and the fact that the # THREADS/# POSTS columns are in reverse order, it looks okay to me.

I like the reverse order. Saves all those trips down the scroll bar.

Test posts posted and ready for testing, SIR!

The reverse order is now changed. I think it works better, too. But too many of our members are used to cruising various UBB Boards. It get's confusing.

We'll work on the link colors.

I could just scream. Guys, I'm really sorry. Two years of UBB habit is hard to break. Under UBB, all I have to do is go to the Forums and see if they're open. Under this software, it reads me as an Admin and always shows open to me. That's a neat feature for maintenance. Unfortunately, I have to learn to check the control panel to make sure that others can get in. Again, I failed to do this.

It's back on now. G-r-r-rrr.

I understand everyone's frustration. It's new software with lots of personal mods. The only way we can get it right is to ask your help. You step over; we catch a problem; we fix it. Sometimes this requires that we shut it down to fix it. But trust me: we're not doing this piecemeal. We're working on it constantly. We've been working on it for 3 weeks. Neither are we using y'all for guinea pigs. Staff's been putting up with the test procs for a week.

So, please bear with us. The Test Forums are just a click away. Check 'em when you can. If you get an error message, or "Board Closed" message, know it's for a reason and check back at your convenience.

The alternative: Tell us you love UBB and wanna stay with it. You'll save us a great deal of headache. ;)

No frustration here, I'm glad to help.

Just tried out the search function - searched all open boards for "Steyr." Got a list of responses in under five seconds!

Rich....forget UBB! This new stuff is great.

Later,
Chris

Well, it looks groovalicious, but ye gods is it sluggish, even through the DSL link, here... I'll assume that's a temporary bugaboo, however. ;)
