Tell me what this is

Q-man,

That gun is a replica of the rifles used for the movie 'Planet of the Apes.'

Dang, I should have recognized the bullpup for what it was, I've only watched 'Ghost in the Shell' about a dozen times...

Yep. Planet of the Apes. I think it's a conversion of an M1 Carbine, but it might be totally made from scratch.

Many of the planet of the apes guns were just wooden props but others were working weapons, most noteably the m1 carbine. The real rifle was encased in a sheetmetal 'stock" which was then painted to look like wood. The same thing was done with a masden (sp?) 9mm SMG.

Ive seen 3 of these working carbines in prop collections and I always thought "making" one would be cool. But how the hell do you reach the magazine release?

Well Q-Man you are right about them useing conversion of the M1-Carbine to make the prop guns for Planet Of The Apes, i was a web site that had a lot of the props from the move, and it had a lot of info on how then made the prop guns, and they said that the use real M1-Carbines to made the prop guns that the Apes had in the frist movie.
Now if you like M1-Carbines then go look at, Battel For The Planet Of The Apes, they used a lot of M1-Carbines in the last bit of the movie, when they were haveing the War at the end.
