Tell me about Glocks ...

I read the following ...
quote:
[Link to invalid post]I never go into the bathroom without a weapon to fight my way back out. Sounds a bit extreme, but I don't feel more vulnerable anywhere than in the bathroom. Musashi chose not to shower his whole life for a reason ...

Think about the bathroom for a minute: You are alone, with no windows to escape, and ONE door. There is no phone. You are usually naked or your pants are around your ankes, highly defenseless. There are no escape routes, no communications out, and few, if any, improvised weapons available to you.

If some bad person catches you in the bathroom, opens the door and comes in to attack you, you have to go THROUGH them to get out. There is no escape but through the door he is blocking, and he is probably armed (with your own kitchen knife if nothing else). Think about the damage that could occur in that tight of a space if you are facing a violent person with a knife and no escape. You better be ready to fight.

There have been cases of bad guys "casing" a house and waiting until they hear the person in the shower before they break in.

You are standing naked in the shower on a slippery surface, you have soap in your eyes, and suddently the bathroom door is kicked in, and a murderer is standing there with a knife between you and your only route of escape. What are you going to do?

My solution comes from GLOCK. I carry it into the bathroom each and every time I go in. It goes into the shower often times, and gets soaking wet. Guess what....it is a GLOCK and it does not matter. I have been doing this for years and never had a rust problem, in fact sometimes I take an extra Glock in, and strip it and scrub it with soapy water while I shower. The ammo has never corroded or gone bad, although I do make attempts to keep it reasonably dry. The corrosion resistance of the Glock is one of the primary reasons that it is the gun that I always have on me.[/quote]... and now I'm seriously thinking about getting a Glock to keep in the bathroom. Not having much experience with them, I am turning to other TFL members for recommendation on models. With the 10-round ammo limit, I'm looking for a model without a lot of "wasted space" -- meaning that whether it's used by LEO's or private citizens, we'll both be able to carry the same amount of ammo. Caliber really doesn't matter -- I'm comfortable with a 9mm, a .40S&W or a .45ACP. I guess to meet this "wasted space" requirement, the .45ACP might be the way to go. Finally, can they be ordered with a NYC trigger-job (heavier trigger pull) or is there some restriction/limitation on when that can be done. Thanks in advance for your comments, suggestions & recommendations.

G26 would be my pick from your listed requirements, though I have yet to figure out this whole NY trigger phenomenon. Why anyone would knowingly/willingly make the trigger pull heavier is bewildering to me. Anyway, the 26 is compact, no wasted mag space, and extremely easy for me to shoot well even without the grip extensions. Great little gun.

I know they got Dustin Hoffman in the tub in Marathon Man but unless one is the CIA chief of station in Beirut I think this treads into the irrational. There's a line between security and paranoia...I can just see the "antis" saying "these gun nuts take them into the shower!" Gimme a break what are you afraid of?

How?

How? If a gun doesn't have a manual safety, then I prefer a heavier trigger pull as found on DA revolvers -- it's a personal thing ... hard to teach an old dog new tricks ;)

I would go with the G30. It;s the biggest caliber you can get in a small Glock. 10+1 rounds of 45ACP. Many say it's the best Glock made if not one of the best. Just about everyone who has shot both the 21 and 30 say the 30 is more accurate. If you plan on getting an M3 light go with the 21. Either gun will take the 13 round pre-ban mags that you can get at a pawn shop or an online auction. They ussually run about $75-$100. A bit steep because they are in demand.

The Glocks trigger pull is rated at 5.5lb but actually is closer to 8lb. I would try the stock set-up first and if you want you can order a NY set-up from Glockmeister and install it yourself (easy).

nuff said

to reiterate, as you feel the 9mm to be an adequate defense round (as do i), the G26 is a great little pistol

FUD, if you want the Glock NY1 trigger (there's also an extra-heavy NY2 trigger), you can buy the spring online for under $30 and install it yourself. I'm no gunsmith and I managed to swap springs in my Glock without any problem.

FUD & Cassandra Complex,

Jeez! I've heard, "Save water! Shower with a friend!"
But isn't this a bit much? :D

The noise required to break into MY home would be enough that I could hear it - even if I'm in the shower. The housebreaker would be confronted suddenly by a naked and very angry fat man (as ugly as Janet Reno), armed with a 12 ga!

BTW, Cass, showering with your Glock would get water into its magazine and other innards. Tupperware or not, I find it hard to believe that soapy water (even followed by a lingering rinse) would be the best for my Glock. ;)

I guess there are some "risks" we're each willing to take. YMMV. To each his own....

Glock 30 would be perfect. Very accurate (though I don't buy the claim thats its more accurate than the G21), light, small, and 10 rounds of .45 ammo at your immediate disposal. I say 10 because I do not recommend loading Glocks with one in the chamber-- the triggers are too light IMO to go 10+1...

Dennis, I wasn't planning on showering with it but Cassandra Complex's post did get me thinking about keeping a gun in the bathroom in a bolted down strongbox with a simplex lock on it. You see, my bathroom has a door that leads to the outside (required by the home owners association) and if somebody decided to break in while I was "reading my evening paper", I just thought that it would be nice to have a firearm within reach so that when the door swings open, a weapon is in hand.

OK I’ve got my bedside gun, my kitchen gun, my bathroom gun, and a gun in the closet by the front door. What do I do about the 15 feet I have to walk through in the hallway where there are no shelves or furniture to stash another gun? Seriously, may God have mercy on the fool who breaks into the house of one of these board members, even if they are on the throne. It will be the worst and last career move he ever makes. Thanks for the interesting threads, some good things to think about.

FUD,

Reflecting on your question and your comments on the "Carry at Home?" thread leads to the suggestion that the answer to the latter question should be "Yes." Carry at home and your gun is with you in the bathroom, the den, the kitchen, the garage, etc., etc. Get a gun and a rig you can wear all the time.

Glocks are fine. Learn to handle it properly and you don't need the NY trigger, although it, too, is fine if you get used to it. (I'm thinking the NY trigger was designed for non-shooters, who don't practice much - like most (not all) big city police officers). Priority should be on a gun you can shoot accurately.

To quote Clint Smith (again), "A gun isn't supposed to be comfortable; it's supposed to be comforting."

Legionnaire, I'm more thinking about those times upon just waking up or just before bed or in the middle of the night when a seated trip might be required. During those times, I normally don't strap on a firearm and it would be comforting to have one nearby especially since I have a door in my bathroom that leads outside to the backyard (required by the home owners association where I live).

How about a Glock on a rope, Sort of like the soap on the rope trick :D
If someone is gonna come in my bathroom to whack me while I'm showering or taking care of other business let them have at it. The watch mutt should have forwarned me well in advance if she can stay awake :) any way with early warning mutt I should be loknloaded ;)

Maybe we should follow Bob Guccione's security plans. Last I heard he has 6 Rhodesian Ridgebacks, several armed guards, alarms and assorted firearms as protection. of course if I had his money I'd treat all of you to a cold beer and some nachos. ;)

Hey,in "Last Man Standing" they got Bruce Willis while he was in the tub and his guns were right next to him. Glocks,is there no end to their utility? "When in the shower or taking a d**p,hang on to your Glock and waste that chump"! Btw, going to a range tomorrow to test fire a G30.
Musashi never bathed? :(
