Tell Me About 9mm 1911s

I once had a Springfield Loaded in 9mm. Did not like it. I bought an STI Trojan from David Dawson after he did his magic on it.

It weights 40 ounces and with slim grips is the best gun in the safe for my Grandson's range trips. The standard load is a 125 cast bullet over 4.0 grs. 231. Not a bobble in several thousand rounds. Recoil is nil and is VERY accurate.

Yes, he has to reload what he shoots.

I have had an Officer sized 9mm on my short list for a while. I decided on the RIA CS Tactical 9mm and it went on sale for under $400 right before Christmas.

I picked it up last week and cleaned it well because it appeared to have been soaked in a barrel of oil from the factory. I took it out last Saturday and put 100 rounds of handloaded hollow points through it and it worked well. The first two mags I had one or two fail to seat completely but it smoothed out after that.

I ordered two stainless Metalform mags from Midway and some LOK G10 grips from Amazon.

I like Officer sized 1911's and now have one each in 45acp, 9mm and 22LR.

I have a Rock Island double-stack 9mm 1911. Over 11k rounds so far, it's been accurate and very reliable. To be honest, I like it better than my Sig 45ACP 1911 Tacops. 9mm + 1911 = fun!

I think the 1911 9mm is a great range gun. I also like the Beretta 92 compact. If you plan on spending what the Beretta costs, get that. If you want a 1911 think high end semi custom (Nighthawk, Guncrafter, Ed Brown, Wilson). Or consider a Browning High Power.

Regarding 1911s, I had a S&W pro series 9 that was reliable but just combat accurate which was disappointing considering its cost (1600 - 1700). It got traded off.

I have a Les Baer PII 9mm with the 1.5" @ 50 yards guarantee and its a one holer (except when I screw up the shot). Sadly, Les is not making 9's at this time. I found mine used on GunsAmerica; it was made in 2011 which heartens the poet warrior in me.

In my experience, 1911s chambered in 9 and .40 are not as reliable as those chambered in .38 Super/10mm/.45. The gun was designed around a cartridge ~1.25" in length, and shorter rounds don't work as well.
How many 9mm and .40 1911's have you experienced? I have not heard of 9MM 1911's being unreliable based on the "shorter" cartridge length. The 9MM magazines came with a spacer which held the cartridges to the front of the magazine...they seemed to work well. Please elaborate if you will.

Hmmm.............9mm not reliable?

My 2001 STI Trojan as many rounds down the pipe. Both M-882 by the thousands and cast lead, very low velocity, by the thousands

I cannot remember once when there was a malfunction. Maybe you were thinking of Springfield Loadeds. My first 9mm 1911 was a SA and would not fire a magazine full without some kink of bobble.

its funny so many people had trouble with the SA loaded 9mm my buddy has one thats been as reliable as my STI Tactical SS.

Although I did have a few Loaded's in .45acp that had some issues.

I've been looking for a commander size 1911 for awhile now and stumbled across this one. It was used but appeared as "new in box" as I've ever seen a gun and was only $599.00. So it came home with me. I've run 450 rounds through it and not had a single issue.

My buddy's 1911 9mm Springer always ran well.

P.S.

Going to take my new Megar mags out for a test drive today. These size / caliber guns are easy and fun to shoot.

9mm 1911

Just over a year ago I bought a used Springfield 1911A1 in 9mm.

I replaced the extractor with a heavy duty one from Evolution Gun Works, and also replaced the recoil spring.

I bought Wilson ETM magazines at the same time.

The gun is quite reliable and pleasant to shoot. Prior to replacing the extractor I had some malfunctions, but that problem has gone away.

The gun is stock except for bigger & more visible sights.
