Teacher Removed for Photo of President Bush

It's not just the Dept. of Ed., though it should dry up and blow away immediately.

It's leftist groups like the NEA, that are infinitely more invested in promotng their own socialist agenda than they are in educating our youth. In fact, with their support of abortion on demand, for example, they advocate killing the very kids they would be teaching. I guess that's one way to work on smaller class sizes.

My son's high school history and social studies teachers are both left of Ted Kennedy. Fortunately, we have raised our sons to think for themselves and not believe everything they are taught in school. We have heard the comment from one of his teachers, though, that we 'shouldn't watch Fox News'. Just who do they think they are?

more invested in promotng their own socialist agenda than they are in educating our youth.

Educating our youth - or I should say indoctrinating our youth - IS "their own socialist agenda". That is their raison d'etre.

Which explains FirstFreedom's conundrum:

What really kills me is that STATE teacher's unions that are affiliated with the NEA actually endorse voting for DEMOCRATS at the federal level, who suck more and more of the states' money for education, in order to pay for federal taxes, including of course the fed DOE.

I don't know where you guys went to school, by my public education was excellent (graduated in '90, well after the "crash"). I took 5 years of math, did college level gel electrophoresis protein analysis, played two sports, participated in academic competitions, band, student government and several plays. My brother had a similar experience 6 years later, and that school seems to be about the same today.

On top of that, I had no idea of ANY of my teacher's politics. There were no political posters, condescending commentary or skewed viewpoints (unless you object to the term "Civil War"). There was maybe three teachers that made reference to their faith, but still kept it personal and not pushy.

In comparing notes with cousins and friends in other schools around Wisconsin, this all seems to be relatively normal.

So where is it that you guys live that you don't have any respect for your teachers and where those teachers (despite the pressures of teaching to new yearly testing standards) have all this available time to editorialize in class?

I can't help thinking that if we respected our teaching establishment (as it is most other places on earth) it would attract more of a quality spread, rather than just those few who felt it so important that they'll trade their higher education for a crummy starting salary educating YOUR children.

Given your previous postings, I find the content of your last post unremarkable.

If you can't see the damage that the 'education system'
is doing to the future of this nation then none of us will be able to open your eyes. You need to look at the broader picture. One school district in Wisconsin does not a nation make.

"So where is it that you guys live that you don't have any respect for your teachers"

Richmond, Virginia. I test people and do career counseling for a living. I got an M.S. in '74 and have been doing this for 30 years.

From the local paper a couple of years ago...SOL = Standards of Learning...

"After last year's SOL testing, 46 of Henrico's (County) 62 public schools were "fully accredited," meaning they had achieved 70 percent pass rates on SOL tests in English, math, science and history. Only 5 of Richmond's (City) 55 schools met that benchmark."

And...

We let a city teacher use one of our evaluation rooms for a GED class a few days a week. Two years ago I was walking down the hall and heard her tell the students that the Democrats care about the people and the Republicans don't.

John

I went to school in the People's Demonratic Kommunewealth of Massachusetts. Even as a teenager I knew the political leanings of nearly all of my teachers. My homeroom and Humanities teacher was a delegate to the Demonrat national convention. She and others made quite a lot of their political leanings and beliefs on a daily basis.
On top of that, I had no idea of ANY of my teacher's politics.
I would have been shocked if you did, but then there is always the possibility of your having blind luck with regard to your ability to discern their political positions.
So where is it that you guys live that you don't have any respect for your teachers and where those teachers (despite the pressures of teaching to new yearly testing standards) have all this available time to editorialize in class?
First let me say that respect needs to be earned.

I currently live in Washington State. I have no children of my own, but I do have limited contact with local kids in my various capacities involving Hunter Education, N.R.A. Firearms instruction, and as a member of American Legion Jr. shooting sports as well as in my capacity as Americanism Committee chair for American Legion Post 159.

What the kids I talk to believe (in terms of what they say their teachers tell them) speaks volumes. Fortunately the kids I deal with are sort of self-selected for learning historical truths - by virtue of their interest in fundamental aspects of our American heritage - as such I am able to direct them to information on the internet (this forum for instance) which the can use for their own further edification in subjects like politics/history/war/religion/philosophy/etc. Other kids aren't so lucky, and that is a crying shame.

The good news - and believe me it's very good news - is that the kids that I interact with are admired by their peers, and slowly but surely they get other kids to think about the BS their teachers feed them, and ask those kids whether or not they think said BS squares with reality. That these kids have access to the internet, the most powerful tool humankind has ever produced, is nothing short of the proof of God's grace.

I thank God every day that my nephew Spencer, the one kid on Earth that I am closest to, was born with a formidable intellect, and has always been able to reason his way around the garbage that some of his teachers try to feed him. He has also been fortunate in that the number of numbhead liberal idiots who teach at his school are severely limited. For that I also thank God.

G,

Given your previous postings, I'm unsurprised that you would be the first to respond, breathing hard over your keyboard. But if you'll actually take the time to READ my post, I was speaking for most "schools around Wisconsin", and I'm sure many of those in neighboring and other states who pay their teachers well have had very similar positive experiences.

And, having lived in Virginia and Florida, I know that many places are nowhere near that standard. I also have no doubt that something absurd happened in South Brunswick (though your guess is as good as mine what actually happened. By all means, let your prejudices be your guide  ). But to lump all educators into some ready made Enemy of the Republic guise is not only misleading, it is demonstratably false.

And SOL is certainly not a solution, but rather another reason that wise and worldly people might have EVEN less reason to be interested in educating the children of people who despise them.

When was the last time anyone heard of parents complaining to the school board that they needed to raise wages to attract quality educators? Where I came from the teachers were paid adequately, and it was obvious in their intelligence and devotion.

E-mailed the links for the school officials to let them know my feelings. They should be ashamed.
The law suit for Shiba Pillai-Diaz ought to be interesting.

Jamie,

There are nore than a few Bush signs up where I live, and I see bumpstickers on cars!

Considering I live in a communist state (and the most commie part too) it looks pretty darn good right about now

District Statement Regarding Bulletin Board at Crossroads Middle School
In an incident that has recently been reported to several media sources, a claim has
been made by South Brunswick Middle School teacher Shiba Pillai-Diaz, that she was fired for
not removing a picture of President George W. Bush from a classroom bulletin board. The
claim is false. While I am normally reluctant to discuss personnel matters in public, Ms. Pillai-
Diaz’ distortions of the facts, along with her aggressive efforts to get herself national media
attention, leave us no choice but to set the record straight.
The facts are as follows:
Ms. Pillai-Diaz is a new Language Arts teacher in the South Brunswick Schools.
Recently, the school administration began receiving complaints from students and parents that
Ms. Pillai-Diaz was using her position, classroom and teaching time to engage in partisan
politics. Students reported that she had made statements which denigrated one party over the
other. The conversations included Ms. Pillai-Diaz telling some students who offered opinions
contrary to her statements, that she was “glad they were not old enough to vote.” Other
comments to students, including such statements as, “you should be ashamed to be a
Democrat” have been verified through student interviews.
A classroom bulletin board, normally intended for curriculum-related matters, was set
up as what she herself described as a “personal bulletin board.” On the bulletin board she
placed a picture of the President, the President's dog, the Oval Office and several other
Presidential artifacts. In addition, she placed a stuffed elephant on a classroom cabinet, which
generated student reaction and discussion about partisan politics.
Following receipt of complaints from parents, the Assistant Principal met with Ms.
Pillai-Diaz and cautioned her not to engage in partisan political discussions in her Language
Arts classes. He did not initially ask her to remove the picture of the President. As the issue
grew in intensity, the teacher herself chose to remove the stuffed elephant because of student
comments.
In the ensuing days, parents expressed increasing concern about the teacher's classroom
behavior, the misuse of classroom instructional time and the personal bulletin board. The level
of concern resulted in a classroom confrontation between some parents and Ms. Pillia-Diaz at
the Back-to-School night program. It was at this point that the school administration decided to
intervene again.
On Friday morning, October 1, Ms. Pillai-Diaz was directed by the Assistant Principal
to remove bulletin board materials because they were being viewed as contributing to an
ongoing disruption of the teaching-learning environment. She refused. She then met with the
Principal who repeated the directive. At this point, Ms. Pillai-Diaz abruptly left the building,
abandoning her post of duty and her classroom responsibilities.
At no time was she told to leave, asked to leave or given authorization to leave.
School was still in session. At no time was she told she was suspended or fired. With
professional responsibilities of a classroom teacher waiting, Ms. Pillai-Diaz chose, of her own
volition, to walk out of the school, contact various media sources and claim she had been fired.
I had occasion to meet with Ms. Pillai-Diaz, along with a union representative and a
police escort that she had requested, for approximately two hours when she returned to the
building later that same afternoon. After listening to her story, I asked if any member of the
administration had used the phrase "you're fired" or anything that remotely sounded like it. She
admitted that no one had used any such language. When I further pursued why she reported to
media sources that she had been fired, she said that she "thought" that she had been. I
explained that principals cannot fire employees, that only Boards of Education can do so. With
her union representative present, she said that she now understood. I asked that when she next
spoke with the media, that she clarify her new understanding.
I fully support the actions of the Principal and Assistant Principal. It is never
acceptable for a teacher to utilize the classroom to advocate for political purposes or advance
personal beliefs. The courts have always admonished teachers for proselytizing in public
school classrooms. This issue is not about a picture of the President, but rather a zealous
misuse of seventh and eighth grade student instructional time.
The South Brunswick School community is enormously respectful of the Office of the
President of the United States, President Bush and the democratic process for choosing our
President. Anyone trying to suggest the contrary has the worst of intentions. Under other
circumstances, the display of a picture of the President would have been viewed as completely
appropriate and uncontroversial.
It is important to note that pictures of President Bush are openly displayed in all of the
South Brunswick Schools. The teacher’s own actions here, however, took it out of the realm of
education and made the presentation appear partisan to many of our students and parents.
Under these circumstances, our actions in directing the removal of the display were singularly
appropriate.

Subject: You kicked out a teacher for showing a photo of our president?

Shiba Pillai-Diaz? You should be ashamed. Don't look for continueing employment - You won't be appointed again.

Handy, first I gotta have a chuckle at your expense. Your teachers werent sufficiently well PAIDED to give you a qualty edumacation. :p Now I'll just tell you that I live in a small town in central Nebraska, and I have to deprogram my kids weekly. Suffice it to say some of the teachers at the school here don't much like seeing me at conference time. E

It's a typo - get over yourself.

And what does Nebraska have to do with my statement? Nebraskan teachers average $6000 a year less than Wisconsin teachers. And you don't like your kid's education - are you trying to make my point? As you sow, so shall you reap.

So, what is everyone nowthinking about this particular he said/she said? Shiba could be telling the truth, but this is starting to sound like a bit of an involved conspiracy. And I don't understand why a police escort was involved. Personally, I think either version is possible, but it no longer sounds like the teacher is giving a good account of herself.

Let's be honest here - membership in the Republican party will not prevent a young person from being rash or foolish.

Get over myself? it was a joke! easy !So using your logic, if we just pay them more they'll quit spouting liberal crap, and teaching revised history? I must be missing something. I'm glad that teachers in your school are not doing this but that does not mean it aint happening. I've seen it in every school my kids have been in. Lighten up man. :D

What I had posted (and you apparently were responding to) was the notion that the problems that people go on about with teachers are directly related to the public attitude about educators and their willingness to pay sufficiently to attract quality people. Money doesn't make dumb people smart, but it does allow the school board to hire smart people in the first place, and attract people to teaching that would otherwise go elsewhere.

I saw the teacher on the news today...she has been re-assigned to an elementary school in the area where,
according to her, she has been encouraged to put the bulletin board with the picture up again by her new administration. She flatly denied being politically motivated in her display. Sounds to me like some extra sensitive Kerry supporters in the community were making life difficult for the administration over this innocent display and she became the scapegoat. She also stated that John Corzine had interceded for her stating, 'if this is just about a picture then I don't understand what all the fuss is about'.

Between all of the lectures and "Vote for John Kerry" posters in my teacher's classrooms, it's a wonder any of them have jobs...
