Which would you buy as a backup? I'm not a cop, just a reg. dude.
I LOVE saving money!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taurus - Brand New - $156.25+7.77 shipping + $15 FFL = $179.02

Ruger LCP II - Brand New - $240.84 +$15 shipping +$15 FFL = $270.84

I wouldn't buy either. The 380 is not an ideal round when there are many 9mm handguns to choose from. You could probably find a PF9 for about the same money. Good luck with your search.

Of the two, Ruger any day. Taurus makes some nice revolvers but there are too many problems reported with their autos for me to ever trust them for self defence.

I'd keep an eye out for the LCP Custom, the one with the red trigger and taller sights. Yeah, the tall sights aren't optimal for pocket carry as they have more chance to snag, but the prices on them are very reasonable and they are MUCH better than the first LCP.

The TCP is a great price, but I just don't trust Taurus and I've heard enough about how poopy their customer service is.

I'd say if you can get the LCP Custom for $230 or less, it's worth getting over the TCP and LCP II

Neither for me. I'd get a Gen 2 of the original LCP. Not a custom, but the one with a better trigger and slightly bigger built in sights. The trigger feels the same as the custom and they don't have the giant gaudy sights. Also, the original LCP has way more accessories available than the custom or the LCP II.

Of the two you listed, LCP II any day. I won't buy a Taurus Auto.

Ruger LCP. Better gun from a better company that stands behind their products.

You can save money by buying a cheaper gun, but in the long run, you might well spend your "saved" money and then some getting your gun to function as it should.

The original LCP is a fantastic gun and all you need from a pocket pistol.

I got rid of my TCP (which was a great little pocket gun) and got the LCPII. When the LCPII came out, Ruger addressed all the gripes I had with the original LCP so I had to have one. It has been 100% so far not one hiccup. It has useable sights that are still pocket friendly, and that OH SO SWEET single action..ish trigger. I say get the LCPII you won't regret it.

When I bought my TCP one of the biggest reasons I got it over the LCP was the trigger. I've heard the trigger on the LCP has been vastly improved. That being the case, as a TCP owner I would recommend the LCP.

I have never owned the TCP, so could not say one way or the other. I have owned 4 LCP's and shot the heck out of them. However, I found out later there are much better 380's out there that shoot so much milder and smoother and just better overall quality. I will no longer advise the LCPs. Find a gun built with a stainless steel frame if possible, especially if you plan on shooting frequently. The Pistol will handle better as well.
Of the two LCP's I would advise the LCP Gen2 over the new Model LCP ll.The LCP gen 2 has a much nicer trigger and safer trigger. The safety factor has been a heated debate among LCP owners. That will be your call to make. One major holster maker put out a notice that he will not make a holster for the LCP ll, because he felt it unsafe. I shot the new model and not only felt it unsafe, but just did not like the action of the trigger at all.
One pistol that I think will come into competition with the LCP mass market will be the RM380. Seems to be getting high marks so far. All 7075 aluminum, very easy to rack, safer trigger. It will be one to watch. And it is priced more competitively than the NEW LCP ll. However I have seen the LCP Gen 2 marked down to as low as $179.00

OP, Keep your eye on http://gun.deals

The TCP was just on sale last week for 139.99, free ship.
https://gun.deals/product/taurus-738-tcp-380-acp-284-barrel-6-rnds-17999

If it wasn't for the fact I don't wanna stock another round I'd have snatched one up.
Luckly (for me) they sold out yesterday or I would have probably caved.

I bought a 709 a few months back, 9mm.. the 738 is even smaller.

I can't give any 1st hand exp with the tcp or lcpII

My 1st hand mouse gun experience is practically nill.
But I'd go with the Taurus cause I like Taurus and it's cheap.. I mean at that price it's competing against hi-points.
.. That's Not to say I don't like Ruger, but I just see the LCP as a keltec ripoff and not sure what they've done to improve the II

Having ownd 4 lcp's given the choice of just those two, I would go with the 738 even though I have never shot one. I have a few friends at my local range that like them. If I am not mistaken the New Taurus Spectrum is based on that platform.(738). I see very low prices on the 738, they must be moving on to the Spectrum. I think the Spectrum and the Rm380 are going to dip heavily into Rugers pocket, (Provided the Spectrum does finally come out).

Note: the New Spectrum will have a stainless steel slide. The RM380 is all metal with 7075 aluminum.

Ya that's the going theory is that the 738 is going to be discontinued after spectrum goes in full swing production.

Spec does look like a nice gun, well thought out carry pistol.
The color options are kinda cool and yet also kinda fruity.

Have not tried the Taurus, but I got the LCP II not long after they came out. While pocket guns are not ideal, for this category I have to say I love it (nice trigger; 100% reliable). I also had the SIG P238 which is in the pocket pistol category, and I actually prefer the LCP II over it (smaller and lighter weight; plus it's about 1/2 the price).

I'd choose the Ruger over the Taurus regardless (within reason) of the cost difference. Around these parts, even the cost difference between the op's two candidates is a non-issue, given the fact that a lgs near me was selling LCPs for $169.99, the last time I looked.

The TCP is an underrated pocket gun. I have owned one and am buying another one because of the great current prices. Taurus cs doesn't have the best reputation but I just sent a Taurus revolver back for repairs. It came back 100% after a 4 week vacation in Florida.
