Taurus PT111 worth buying?

Hi Bill,
Like I said, they have their fair share of lemons. Something like what your nephew had would have been seen by a close examination of the firearm, if he's not a gun nut like some of us it's hardly his fault for not noticing it - to bad the shop he got it from either didn't notice or didn't say anything to him about it. My wife got me a Ruger Blackhawk with a similar problem, but not to the extreme that you're describing, it's something that can happen to every manufacturer and something fairly easy for the non enthusist to miss.

Nope, I don't work for Boeing, I used to work for MSFT though. Now I work for a smaller software company that you likely haven't heard of, Onyx.

:barf: the thing wasn't worth it. it would jams, have misfires and basicly the trigger was bad. thank the Lord i only rented it

Orlando what is it about their security system that bugs you so much? I have yet to fire one that has it so I don't know if it interferes with the trigger pull. Is it because it adds one more thing that could go wrong and make the gun inoperable? Or is it more of a philosophical dislike of them adding something that seems to be caving into the anti gunners?

John,

Yes, I've heard of Onyx.

I did a bit of software testing for Boeing over the years, mostly military programs like the B-1 bomber avionics, B-52 avionics upgrade, the 777 commercial airliner, and a few others.

Your certainly right about lemons, and almost all companies let one slip through now and then. I think the difference is how well they address the problems.

Taurus does not appear to be responsive to customer problems.

My nephew bought the Taurus revolver in good faith from Gart Brothers Sports (now Gart Sports nationally) in Denver, but wasn't knowledgeable enough to recognize the problem. What's really ironic, is that the Gart family heirs are his next door neighbors! :(

Both. It's a very useless system to start with. Why would one need it when most guns come with external trigger locks? All it does is to make the gun less reliable. It is just one more part that is going to break even if is never use.

If someone ask me which is better an external trigger lock or "integrated safety locking system". Ten out of ten times I would tell them to go for the external trigger lock that comes with most guns. Why?

1. IMHO is faster to unlock an external trigger lock then an "integrated safety locking system".
2. "Integrated safety locking system" might impact the reliability of the gun.
3. It creates more problems then it "fix", which is none at all.
4. Sooner or later that part will break and might even lock your gun in the process without you knowing it.
5. One cannot know if an "integrated safety locking system" is active or not. With an external trigger locks you will know.
6. It really really get on my nerve that a gun company like Taurus bow down to GUN GRABBING LIBERALS that do not know a damn thing about gun safety.

I have and will always recommend first time gun buyers to take a gun training, safety, and conceal carry class. Training is the best way to prevent AD/ND.

I seem to recall hearing that Taurus made a big contribution to the NRA, That may help to explain the good review in AR.;)

Orlando,

Wow. I don't see the integrated locking system as bowing to the liberals at all. When you look at it and use it, it feels like it would be much faster to utilize than a clunky trigger lock, and it doesn't run the risk of scratching the finish on the gun. I guess I can understand where you're coming from -- any locking system is a bad locking system when the fit is hitting the shan. But this one just seems rather innocuous. You simply don't turn the key to lock it, and your problem is solved. I can't, however, address your concerns about future reliability stemming from the addition of the locking system, since my particular Millennium sucked from the start.

In any case, like the previous poster said, Taurus is in very good standing with the NRA. They give free NRA memberships (or renewals) with each gun you purchase. Unless we depart planet earth and enter the realm of psychotic bunker paranoia, that would seem to be a pretty anti-"GUN GRABBER" position to take.

*shrug*

I have both the Taurus P-111 and the Kel Tec P-11. The only problem I have encountered was the mag catch on the Kel Tec failed to secure the mag. I contacted Kel tec and they sent me a new catch within 4 days. I thought this was great service. I have had no problems with the Taurus as of this date.
Both guns feed reliably and are reasonably accurate.
