Looking at buying a pt940 from my local gun shop for 350.00. Price seems to be good for a stainless 40 cal but I have never owned a Taurus auto and need some input from those who own Taurus autos. Also where can I find a good price on 940 mags, my shop wants 38.00 per mag.

Well.....the slide is stainless the frame is allow. They are one of the nicest 40's Ive owned. Ive had 2 940's and 1 911. They will do anything you want them to and then some. The only thing I didnt like about mine was the slide to frame fit...but they are all that way...just a little loose.

They are very nice guns........anyone who tells you different hasnt shot one :D

Shoot well.

Pt940

I would go for a SW99 or the Beretta 96 in 40SW. Most of the reviews I've read of Taurus auto pistols show only marginal accuracy.

I have fired many Taurus autos (and revolvers) and never had a problem with accuracy or any other problems. Most complaints of an inaccurate gun are directly related to the shooter.

"Right after Eric Larsen's post. Are you related to Ms. Cleo or Nostradamus perhaps Eric?"

Nope! Ive just owned enough Taurus guns and seen how the "Gun Rag N I-net Forum" experts approach this kind of thread............Simply put.

Funny isnt it.........."My brothers cousins aunts neighbor had a TORIS and it blew up killing 47 women and children" :D :D :D

Shoot well.

PT940 is a good gun

There is one small issue that you should be aware of. On the right side of the gun just above the grip is the trigger bar. On top of the trigger bar rides the trigger bar spring in a narrow grove. The spring is very thin and can pop out of the grove causing the gun to be a "Single Shot" pistol. Once I figured out why the pistol would fire the first shot and then nothing on the second trigger pull; I was able to pop the spring back in place and it shoots flawlessly now. In a pinch, if it ever happens when firing the pistol at the range, or elsewhere, you can manually apply a little bit of pressure with your thumb directly on the trigger bar to keep it aligned and it will keep shooting. Tricky to do, but it's a quick fix without having time to take off the grip cover. I would reccommend this gun to anyone who wants to carry a medium sized full steel, not plastic, pistol.

I have a pt111 from 2007 that still works perfectly. More recently their reputation has been getting better and better. I think their quality control went up when they got their new CEO. I cant speak to the 40s but their 9mm guns seem very good and at a low price point. Like any gun, get it, and test it. All companies release good guns and all release lemons. You won't know until you try it. A shop owner recently told me that he hasn't had a taurus returned in years. And around me that surprising to hear about any brand because most of the shops around me wont suggest anything unless it says glock.

NO NO NO NO NO!

No Taurus firearms. Look at something else. That company is full of crap. You can never get parts, lemons right out of the box, terrible customer service, etc.

Just stop right here, save your money and buy something else.

Everything in this world fits into a gradient of probability and proportionality. Taurus certainly has a higher chance of making you unhappy than other brands. Stay away.

The PT 940 is not part of the "class" of guns named in the Taurus class action suit settlement from May of this year (Carter v. Forjas Taurus, S.A., et al.). However, I wouldn't accept that gun without an armorers inspection and approval, and I would want to be able to get a full refund including the cost of the inspection if the gun doesn't pass muster. My gunsmith charges $30.00 to do this inspection and my gun is usually turned around in 2-3 days. At this point, all of my guns bought new & used have had this inspection done, and I think the inspection report is some cheap insurance!

For that price you can probably get into a Springfield XD in .40.

I've got one. Mine is black with gold accents and pearl grips. shoots great, the extra weight of the metal frame (as opposed to some polymer .40s i have shot) helps cut down on the snappiness of the .40. never had a malfunction, even with tulammo. accuracy is good, i can consistently ring my 8 inch plate at 50-ish feet. downsides are magazines are expensive (i dont need more than 2 mags anyway) and it can be a little difficult to find parts if you need to since they arent made anymore

I will never own another taurus anything. I had a pt140 that shot about 10" low left at ten yards and the mag fell out after every shot from recoil and a pt738 that started gouging cases. You can buy something a lot better for 100 dollars more. I've never owned any of their metal frame guns so maybe they're better, but I'm not taking that chance.

Some are good, some bad.

I have a raging bull in 454 that is flawless. Also a 740 that's run about 1000 rounds (which is a bunch from a small gun) and it too has been flawless.

The 9 series has been good to buddies that have them. Biggest thing is a serious cleaning is needed as they seem to come full of shipping grease which hinders operation and collects grit. I think many new gun issues are related to that, but some are just lemons!

Buy or not, it's up to you and your wallet. Inexpensive guns should be inspected closely, no matter the brand. For full size I've been migrating to the cz75 platform. The EAA witness platform has been great.

Owned two Taurus guns, one 38 revolver that the barrel cracked after 12 rounds of standard factory ammo. Owned a 9mm that jammed constantly. Nope never again

Have owned three Taurus pistols since the early 90s. All have been great guns. My first one the PT-92 I think is what it was called my best friend liked it so much I sold it to him many years ago. My current one the .357 Taurus Tracker has about 3000 rounds through it and very accurate at the range. Hell I did not even know there was such a hatred for Taurus until I started doing online research for a pocket pistol a few months ago.
