taurus model 83 38special crap or good?

My 2 cents.

My Taurus PT-99 9mm Berretta clone is my last 9mm ever. It has NEVER failed and has proved reliable as a red brick. I even stopped cleaning it for over 1500 rounds not so much as a bore brush. I only oiled the locking block. It never failed. I even tried to limp wrist on purpose. Nothing. I even shot it holding it upside down and used my pinky to pull the trigger. Again nothing. I have since cleaned it and it is my only 9mm auto. Period. Ever. I would not trade it for ANY new 9mm. Glock, HK, Berretta.....nothing. Does Taurus have a bad gun once in a while? Yes. But so does COLT, S&W, and any other manufacturing company. If you break it down to percentage of what is produced they are right in line with any other company. So don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I bought a S&W 642 for $400. The finish started falling off and I couldn't hit a barn with it. The absolute worst finish I have ever seen on any gun. I guess I can say all S&Ws are crap. At least I can say S&W can't build a decent $400 gun either. Never had such problems with Taurus.

I guess everyone has an opinion about Taurus revolvers and it mostly depends on their experience with them. In my limited experience I have to agree with previous posters that rated them crap.

Comparing Taurus to S&W is like comparing Chevy to Mercedes. Both are cars, but when I pay so much more for the Mercedes I am darned sure going to expect a lot better quality. Taurus may not be "as good as" S&W, but it is also not nearly as expensive. And let's keep it new vs new or used vs used. I have heard the used S&W vs new Taurus argument. Sorry if I am off topic or hijacking the thread.

You can start a thread on ice cream or pizza here, and it will turn into a Taurus bashing thread.

I've never had a problem with Taurus, so I don't get too excited about the same old stories from the same old crowd.

I like the Glock bashing threads much better.

Now that explains everything. Hammer broke off? Trigger cracked? Barrel bent? Stocks broken? Sights fell off? Firing pin broke? Trigger guard bent? Cylinder release cracked? Mainspring broke? Too much, too little barrel-cylinder gap? Trigger return spring broken? Bent frame? Hand broken? Out of time? Trigger return guild bent? Other? Just what flavor of crap did you experience?

@dahermit: That's a fair question, and I'll answer for my Taurus model 83:

The hole in the crane for the ejector rod is drilled grossly oversize. And I mean grossly. With the crane and cylinder fixed, I can wobble the end of the ejector rod a full 1/16 of an inch. (I just measured the end play.) Even with the cylinder closed, the front of the cylinder wobbles like a cheap top. However, no other problems with the revolver.

My Taurus 851 .38spl snubbie is as reliable as they come. It will throw lead down range as accurately as you can hold it time after time. A pawn shop buy for about $210 and its my nightstand gun. I'd carry it daily with no concerns except it is just slightly heavier than my Ruger LCR...

It's hard to hijack a thread that originally died over 12 years ago. And even if you were hijacking the thread, the OP hasn't been active on TFL for about 4 years now, so I doubt he'd mind ;).
