Taurus (better these days?)

I forgot to mention, I have compared the double action pull of many Taurus snubb revolvers to that of many Smith and Wesson snub revolvers and I prefer the Taurus pull (a sentiment I have heard echoed on this forum often). This only goes for the snub versions no the full size firearms from what i have heard. One last note I am considering buying the 617 also for concealed carry, my biggest reason being that it offered 7 shots while weight remained close to that of steel 5 shot firearms. I like the comfort of 40% more firepower. If you are only planning on shooting .38 specials you might consider the 817ul a seven shot .38 sp on and allow frame weighing 21 ounces and costing roughly $ 300 or so.

Steeltoe, one thing to remember, guns are an investment as much as a hobby or personal protection and Smith and Wesson or Colt will have a much better resale value than Taurus or even Ruger to a certian extent, altough Ruger is better than Taurus. Look at some used guns at some local gun shops and compare the used condition of the differnt brands and their relative prices. S&W or Colt + long term value with appritiation in value. Ruger's value tends to be firm but not increasing much with time. Tauras will depriciate.

thanks all

Thank you everyone on the great advice. I am still trying to figure it out. I am liking the idea of the S&W 686p. Would this gun be able to be pocket carried if I got a pocket holster? I have also been told that havign a classic style hammer sucks bad for concealed carry. I am debating getting a 5 shot with internal hammer or a shrouded one where I can still Single action it. Hmmm Anyone know of a shoruded hammer with 7 shot? :)

I have a 617 in stainless and i love it. It has been very reliable and it shoots great. personaly i would stick with the stainless. Taurus can be a crap shoot buy i like mine. i also own a King Cobra and an Anaconda. i like them all

the local store charges $75 for this type of transfer

Find a new store. Seriously. $75 is completely outrageous for a transfer fee. It's not like the guy is doing any serious amount of work on your behalf.

Taurus 617 comes with bobbed hammer also, or you can have a gunsmith do this for relitivly cheap however 7 shot revolver may be a little big for pocket carry.

Here's my thoughts on Taurus, which I posted on another forum:

"Taurus
My first Taurus, a Model 85, blew up and Taurus replaced it with no problem. I traded it for a Model 605. When the hammer stud broke on it, Taurus replaced it, again with no problem.

As soon as the new 605 arrived, I traded it for a S & W Model 649 which has turned out to be the most accuarate snub that I've ever owned.

There are no Taurus products in my future,

John"

My opinion of Taurus has not changed. I got very good service from them but I have no desire to ever own another. My "always" gun is now the "beast", a Smith 340SC. It kicks like a mule but it's so light that it is the best I've found for carry in pocket, IWB, paddle, or ankle. It's not as accurate as the 649 but at 15 yards, I can still keep all rounds in the black of an NRA 15 yard bullseye target,

John

My Model 689 has shot well...>

...a stainless steel 6-shot .357 with a 4" barrel. It's still early days at only 900 rounds, but so far, so good. Single action is light and crisp. Double action is only average, a touch on the heavy side, but not moreso than equivalent S&W and Rugers I have shot.

I'm kinda late here, but if you're still open to suggestions...
I have a Taurus 85 UL that I have used for carry and weekly shooting since April. Neither SA or DA have heavy triggers. It takes +p ammo without problems. But it doesn't compare to the SW M36 I purchased online for $400.00. It's as good and lightly used as it looks with outstanding mechanics.

I purchased this SW M66, 2 1/2", 6 shot, last week for $427.00. It has never been fired and should arrive next week.

You have allot of options, so good luck... :)

Also coming in kind of late to this discussion, but I did want to weigh in. I had serious problems with my Taurus revolver. I had one of the snubbies chambered for 9mm that used moon clips to hold the rounds in place. It would shoot fine for 5-10 shots until the cylinder would heat up and expand, effectively jamming the gun. In addition, the trigger was rough and stagey. I got rid of it, and replaced with a Ruger SP101 in .38 Special.

thanks all

Thanks everyone. I am thinking about either a S&W 640 or a 649. My only real choice now is do I want double action only internal hammer or shrouded for the single action option but then looking like the silliest flare gun I have ever seen. Hmmmmm

Thoughts?

I've owned and carried a few

S&W 37, my first Airweight, nice but not rated for +p...gone (sold).
S&W 360PD, my first Scandium AirLite, awesome, .357 capability but the exposed hammer had me worrried about snagging during the draw....gone.
S&W 340PD, with red ramp sight, well, you cannot SA it, but who cares?
(Keeper!)
and more recently, 340PD with HiViz sight, a minor improvement, shouldn't have bought it but I couldn't resist...
...Mark the red ramp one "For Sale"...interested? Contact me. :)

Personally, I would recommend getting the shrouded hammer, or having the hammer bobbed.

For a short range conceal carry weapon, that hammer presents the liability of snagging on clothing as you attempt to draw from concealment. If you get in a gunfight, fine motor control is a lot more difficult to use. Make your draw as easy as possible.

With practice, shooting double action is easy. Especially on Smith revolvers, which have very good triggers.
