taurus 917 info/reviews?

Starting the thread to get others info/feedback on the taurus 917c... after careful consideration on buying a pistol after relocating from nyc after 10 years to a less gun ownership-restrictive state...
although i have the means to have purchased any pistol i would have wanted, regardless of make, design, or caliber, i decided on the taurus 917... i shot everything out there and arrived at the mindset that i wasn't convinced on reinventing the mousetrap, i wanted a classic design ala 1911 (which is as accurate as you've always heard about if you've never shot one...), which was battle/endurance tested and proven, available in the modern international standard (where 9mm is the winner if you agree with: adequate power + capicity = or > sheer stopping power - capacity).
i could buy 3 beretta's if i wanted... after 1000 rounds with 0 failures in less than a week (while at the same time a "tack driver" compared to most of the striker fired and/or boutique 1911's i tried, oh, and beretta 92s, which i feel are a step behind design-wise...), i'm extremely happy about picking the taurus. the common sense regarding the frame mounted (ala 1991) safety/decocker alone, while still being based on the most proven hi-cap 9mm battle tested design, has been a fine choice for me. and while the firearms world has so many broad opinions, i'd encourage any one with "brand name bias" to read this: http://www.taurususa.com/newsreviews/HG2004_000.cfm
as far as i can tell it's got all the 92's good qualities intact, in a slightly lighter, quicker to point size. the closest thing that compares is an h&k usp, which is heavier, a lot more expensive, and doesn't have an ambi safety as solid as the 1911 type not to mention near the same warranty.
looking to maybe add a williams firesight or similar at some point, if anyone's added a fiber optic front or picked up one of the short run 917's w/ standard fiber optic front, let me know how it performs...

I have a PT917CS (decocking/safety lever) 9mm Stainless. Really has great detail, a bright polish and front finger groves. Shooting it was uneventfull. Worked every time. Cost me $400 NIB with a 17 rd mag and and extended 20 rd magazine.
Taurus's Beretta copies are good. This is close to the discontinued Beretta Brigadier

uneventful, exactly. i paid 400 for the gun w/ 1 17rd mag and 1 20 rd mag, 25 for an extra hi-cap mag (32rd... why not?), and 75 for the laser... so for 500 i've got a rock solid piece, that's accurate (the front sight has windage and the design shoots straight, once i kicked it slightly for my groupings, it's been exceptional for a robust combat-style set-up, hits where you point it ala 1911) 100% reliable, after over 4000 rounds through it, i have no idea why there are so many taurus haters (and also wondering why beretta isn't making something like this...)? although price wasn't really a concern for buying the gun, the price of ammo was, since practice makes perfect, and i like being able to shoot a lot (while not going broke or ******* off my wife...), 9mm is around 10 a box vs. 25 or so for .45, and loaded w/ 147gr JHP it has about 90% the punch of a .45, so i'm very pleased with the purchase. based off how this one has performed, i know i'll be picking up a taurus 1911 soon and i'll just have to find a way to pay for some boxes of .45 now and then..

I just got the PT1911ALR. Don't let the nay sayers talk you down. One heck of a tricked out well made firearim for only around $600. Only thing I didn't like were the grips which was an easy fix.

the 1911ALR is next on the list. killer piece for the money, in the name-game 1911 world, i don't even know what it would cost for that spec, my guess is way north of 600... as taurus does well seems the quality has risen, also, i think the opinion is changing about the quality of thier guns these days, especially since they're making most of the parts for the boutique makers anyways...

any recommendations on anything out there that's similar (9mm), yet different, that's worth taking a look at? was about to pick up a Steyr M9-A1, but was disappointed to find out that they're no longer being imported to the US with the manuel safety... i'm not one of those guys who thinks safety's are steamrolling my rights, or trying to ruin my life, i just like knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that the thing will only go off if i want it to, and in my opinion the only "safe" way to carry a gun that has a trigger safety only, is without a round in the chamber... the folks who carry glocks and such with rounds in the chamber in my opinion are putting innocent bystanders at the mercy of their judgement (and let us not forget a lot of those same people probably voted for Bush... hmmm).

.... picked up a ruger sr9 a couple weeks ago and it fits the bill perfectly of what i've been looking for, very similar to the 917 in 1911 like operation, holds 17, but has the benefit of much better ergos and way slimmer grip than the taurus (even better than the steyr which are pretty darn good...). plus it's got an honest to goodness thumb safety which i feel better about as far as carry is concerned (i know most aren't as opinionated on that feature as i am, however it's got a safe-action trigger exactly like a glock, so the safety can be left off if that's someone's choice). i've put 1000 rounds through it already and it's been flawless, most accurate and easiest to shoot pistol i've ever used, 1.5"-2" groups at 15 yards, check one out if you get a chance.

Taurus PT917 CS

Just picked up my new 917 Saturday. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but it is a great looking gun. One thing though. The dealer told me my warranty would be void if I shot any Wolf ammo through it. Has anyone else been told anything like that ? Sounds a bit excessive. Thanks.

wolf is really the bottom of the barrel... super dirty, and low grade metal casing, and it's only around $1 more per box to shoot brass cased stuff, if you like your gun, i think you should spend that extra dollar. however, the 917 will take it, it's a tough gun, it's just really crummy ammo, consider winchester white box, blazer brass, or monarch green box as economical options that won't void your warranty.

I bought one bout two weeks ago. ive only put 150 rounds trough it. no problems. where can i get that 32rd mag at anybody know??

It worked just fine, and was a good training aid for dry fire practice, however these days I prefer and have been using the glock rail light on my G17 w/ luminova sights...
Just prefer to see what I may or may not be shooting at and realisticly at the SD ranges I'd likely be confronted with I'm confident of hitting what I need to...
It's a good laser for the money though.

The dealer told me my warranty would be void if I shot any Wolf ammo through it.

.....ummmmm does this ring the BS bell for anyone else?? I've never heard of this one before. At one point in time Wolf ammo was much cheaper than anything with a brass case, and worth the extra cleaning IMO...but now, yeah, brass case is either the same price, or only a buck or two more. If you are concerned about it though-call up Taurus CS and ask them-does the use of Wolf brand ammuntion void the warranty.
