As a gun, the S&W Model 10 is a lot better than the Taurus, especially as that is an older Model 10. The reason the price is going higher than the regular police trade in is because of those markings, which give it some collector interest. If you are not interested in that aspect and just want a good revolver, the other sources of Model 10s should work for you.
As to durability, any gun can wear out, but a Model 10 takes a long time and a lot of shots to do it. The modern Model 10s can be used with +P, but +P+ is a no-no for any .38 Special revolver and should be used only in .357 Magnum revolvers. (I know it sounds silly, but the .38 Special +P+ was made for law enforcement as a public relations round. It gave police .357 power while allowing the police PR to say that they were using .38 Special, not those awful .357 Magnums.)
